Vision Pillar
Ever since Helen Keller inspired us to champion the cause in 1925, we’ve served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired. Nearly a century later, this long-standing mission continues unhindered.

Supporting Ontario Blind Golf: $2000 Donation from Oak Ridges Lions Club
We are excited to announce a $2000 donation from the Oak Ridges Lions Club to Ontario Blind Golf (OBG). This donation will fund two golf training sessions this summer, one for youth and the other for women, in Richmond Hill and Guelph.
Ontario Blind Golf is dedicated to promoting integrity, sportsmanship, socialization, and relationship-building. OBG helps its members, and the blind and visually impaired community, gain confidence and perseverance to achieve their goals. Welcoming golfers of all ages, both recreational and competitive, OBG leverages the transformative power of sports to create positive social change and enhance opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals.
We are proud to support OBG's mission and contribute to the growth and empowerment of blind sports. Thank you for being a part of this important work!
We are blown away by the thoughtfulness and caring of our community! We are proud to say we saved 718 pairs of glasses from landfill with our Used Eyewear Drive and these glasses (along with thousands more collected over our District) will make a major impact in the lives of so many deserving individuals. We are honoured to continue the quest laid out for us by Helen Keller, and so thrilled you and many other residents are helping us make the world a whole lot brighter! Thank you!
FEBRUARY IS VISION MONTH FOR ORLC!
We are doing it again! Please donate your old, used and unwanted eyewear in any of our drop box locations listed in our flyer in the month of February. Our past campaigns have been very successful and we are hoping to keep that momentum going! All your old, tired and unwanted eyewear is a "gift" to those who suffer with poor eyesight, and the gift you give to those who receive them is two-fold. Someone desperately in need of glasses can finally see, and we keep them out of the landfill here at home! It's a win-win situation! If you have any questions, please reach out to Walter!
Thank you in advance everyone:)
On January 23rd, we had the honour of celebrating Yashas Bhat, the District A-16 Peace Essay winner, with his essay "Dare to Dream". Created to give an opportunity for visually impaired young people to express their feelings of peace, the International Essay Contest is a staple of Lions clubs around the world. Lions work with local schools and area families to identify young people who are interested in participating and who could benefit from this program. Yashas a young, visually impared student from Oak Ridges was selected to represent Richmond Hill in the contest and his essay was then awarded the District top prize.
Federal, Provincial and Municipal leaders came together with Lions leaders and members, along with York District School Board representatives and of course, Yashas' parents to celebrate Yashas. We were honoured to be his sponsoring club and to make a special donation presentation to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in honour of Yashas' accomplishments.
It was a very special evening for everyone, and we are very grateful to all those that participated.

Club President Walter Haluza and Secretary Donna Harrison, with a small portion of the glasses!
Our team at Oak Ridges Lions Club is overwhelmed with gratitude to residents for their generosity and support of our Visual Initiative in February. We placed donation boxes for used eyewear in various sponsors establishments in and around Oak Ridges, and asked residents to “donate” their used eyewear, so that we could help those individuals who would cherish the gift of sight. We are blown away by the support we received in this!
We collected 825 pairs of glasses!
