PLAINFIELD LIONS CLUB

2024 - 2025

Just getting started!

2023 - 2024

Here is what we accomplished last year:

  1. Donated $1000 to the Partnership for Better Health through the Western Cumberland County Lions Project Fund.  Money was distributed to Bethany House ($230), Safe Harbour ($160), Supportive Partnerships for Youth (SPY), Big Spring Senior Center and Employment Skills Center ($100 each), Salvation Army ($60), and to the Carlisle Kiwanis Club Foundation, Peyton Walker Foundation, Shippensburg Produce Outreach, and Reins of Rhythm Riding and Horsemanship ($50 each).  These organizations were selected by our club members.

  2. Honored 8 Big Spring High School Seniors as Students of the Month for their academic and community achievements.  Each student received a plaque and a check for $100.  They and their family also received a free meal.  This year’s honored students were Leah Bear, Amber Cribbs, Mackenzie Flickinger, Johnathan Gleed, Katelynn Mattern, Sarah Slotter, Levi Stewart and Blake Wenger.

  3. Gave $700 to St Matthews Lutheran Church in Plainfield.  This donation was for the use of the church for our meetings and a gift to the cooks/servers that provided the meals for our meetings.

  4. Covered the cost of a week ($650) at Beacon Lodge Camp for Tara Garman, who is blind after contracting Juvenile Batten Disease.  A project to help Tara was the impetus for the creation of the Western Cumberland County (WCC) Project Fund.

  5. Donated 92 quarts of chicken corn soup to local churches, who in turn distributed the soup to shut-ins in the local area.

  6. Donated $500 to the Lions Club Internation Foundation for projects worldwide.

  7. Donated $480 to the District Governor’s Projects Fund, which was divided as follows:  County Food Banks, Disaster Relief, Eye Screening, Leo Club Support, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Club International Foundation, Diabetes Awareness and Education, Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation, Northeast PA Lions Service Foundation, PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, PA Lions Care for the Kids (Four Diamonds), PA Lions Hearing Research Foundation and PA Lions Sight Conservation and Eye Research Foundation.

  8. Prepared 37 fruit baskets for individuals and families in the Plainfield, Newville, and Carlisle areas.

  9. Sponsored the 2024 Easter Egg Hunt held on 30 March 2024, at West Pennsboro Park.  Over 50 children of all ages received prizes, hunted eggs, and had a chance to say “HI” and have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny.

  10. Donated $300 to the West Pennsboro Fire Company, who let us use their grounds for the soup sale.

  11. Donated $250 to West Pennsboro Township for the use of their park for the Easter Egg Hunt and the club picnic.  Request made that the money be used in the Parks and Recreation Department.

  12. Donated $200 to Leader Dogs for the Blind.

  13. Donated $125 to Beacon Lodge as part of the 500 Club ($5.00 per club member).

  14. Donated $100 to the Western Cumberland County Lions Project Fund to sponsor a hole at that organization’s annual golf tournament.

  15. Donated $50 to the Zone Social, which was in turn donated to the Carlisle Police Department K-9 unit.

  16. Donated numerous bake sale items for their bake sale held in September 2023.

  17. Club members filled over 20 bags of garbage along PA Route 641 as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program in the Plainfield area.

TO DO ALL OF THIS WE RAISE MONEY BY

Selling chicken corn soup.  Soup sale will be held at the West Pennsboro Fire Hall in October 2024.

Selling ham and cheese or turkey and cheese sandwiches in February and May 2024.

We have brooms for sale.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED THIS YEAR BY PUTTING INTO ACTION THE LIONS MOTTO:    WE SERVE!

EASTER EGG HUNT

The Plainfield Lions Club will again sponsor the annual Easter egg hunt at West Pennsboro Park for the children in the community on Saturday, April 10, 2025, (Rain/snow date is April 17, 2024) starting at 11:00 am.    The Plainfield Lions Club has been the sponsor of the community's Easter Egg hunt for over 30 years.

CHICKEN CORN SOUP

Every year the Plainfield Lions Club sells our delicious chicken corn soup.  In past years we would make the soup in huge black kettles.  Unfortunately, in the past couple of years we have had problems, first with the condition of the corn that was grown and then the COVID pandemic.  We now purchase the soup from the Country Butcher Shop and sell it in that manner.   Look for our soup sale on October 24 - 26, 2024 at the West Pennsboro Fire Company.

WESTERN CUMBERLAND COUNTY (WCC) LION PROJECTS

The Plainfield Lions Club are part of the Western Cumberland County (WCC) Lions that work on large-scale projects in the Carlisle area.  Plainfield Lions supplied the leadership of Peck and Jill Freeland, who have graciously opened their home for fund raising meetings during the past year.  Plans include a golf tournament at Eagles Crossing in June 2025 and a bake sale at the Country Butcher Shop in Plainfield on Labor Day weekend in 2025.

Contact Lion Acting Secretary Charlie Holtry for information or to place an order for any of these fund raising efforts.
