Brief History of the Club

The Plainfield Lions Club has served the town of Plainfield and the townships of West Pennsboro, Upper Frankford and Lower Frankford since being chartered on February 3, 1959.  The Charter Presentation ceremony was held later that year on April 11, 1959 at the Big Spring High School.  The club was sponsored by the Newville Lions Club.  The first President was J. Richard Zimmerman and the first Secretary was Donald E. Weston.  The Plainfield Lions Club today has 23 members.  While initially the Plainfield Lions Club was for men only, today the club would be lost without the service of their 10 female members, including Past and Current President Jill Freeland, who was the first female to serve as President of the Club during 2011-2012.

Our Club distributes Christmas Fruit baskets to the needy members of the Plainfield area in December, and sponsors the Annual Plainfield Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Palm Sunday at the West Pennsboro Community Park.  The Club continues to recognize 8 outstanding Big Spring High School seniors every year.  The Club has been a major contributor to the Community Park, helping to build and maintain a number of pavillions and donating the flagpoles for the West Pennsboro Veterans Memorial.  The Club has contributed monies to local Girl and Boy Scout clubs, as well as PA Beacon Lodge, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Diabetes Research and Lions Club International Foundation.  We also recently adopted a portion of PA Route 641 to remove litter during the spring and fall seasons as part of PennDOT's Adopt-A-Highway program.

To raise money for these projects, the club holds 4 major fund raising events each year.  In February and in May, the club sells Ham and Cheese or Turkey and Cheese sandwiches with regular or pretzel rolls.  However, we are most famous for our homemade Chicken Corn Soup sale, which we sell every year in October.  Please check our website regularly for the dates of these events.

How do you become a member?  First, you must have a desire to make a positive contribution to the Plainfield community.  Then it helps if you enjoy good food and good friendships in a congenial atmosphere.  If that is you, merely contact one of our club members and indicate your desire to join.  You willl be invited to attend one of our dinner meetings as our guest so you can make an intelligent decision about joining the club.  We meet once a month (on the first Wednesday of the month), except during Lent, when the Club moves its meeting night to Tuesday evening.  We do not meet in July or August.  Our meetings are held at St Matthews Lutheran Church in Plainfield.  You can contact us by calling 717-254-3950 or by sending an email to PlainfieldPaLions@comcast.net for more information.

The Club is always looking for service-minded individuals, couples and families looking to make a difference in the local community.  PLEASE, WON'T YOU JOIN US!  WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU WITH US!
