 East Windsor Lions Club

Brief History   

     THE EAST WINDSOR LIONS CLUB WAS CHARTERED IN APRIL OF 1953, SPONSORED BY THE ENFIELD CT. LIONS CLUB WITH TWENTY-THREE MEMBERS. FROM THAT TIME ON THE EAST WINDSOR LIONS HAVE BEEN A STRONG AND VERY ACTIVE SERVICE CLUB.

 CHARTER MEMBERS: WALTER COLTON PRES. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY SEC. ROGER OWENS TREASURER, ANTHONY MUSKA, JOHN BARNES, LEON BURR, FRANCIS FAY, NELSON KOEHLER, ALBERT NOWAK, KENNETH ARNOLD JR., BRUCE BAYLEY, WILLIAM CHAPMAN, DAVID FULLER, AUGUST MAFFASOLI, DR. ANTHONY SCAVATO, SIDNEY BALF, ROBERT BRONSON, HENRY DeRONCK, ALEX GUDZUNAS, JAMES NILSSON, FRANK SHONOSKY, BURTON WADSWORTH, EDWARD WISNIEWSKI.

 THE FOLLOWING IS OUR HISTORY OF THE CLUB AS PRESENTED IN THE NEW “A BRIEF HISTORY OF CONNECTICUT LIONISM", 1922/1983.

 THE EAST WINDSOR LIONS CONTRIBUTED OVER $3000 IN DIRECT CASH GIFTS IN ONE YEAR, 1981/1982. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THEIR MANY SERVICE AND CIVIC PROJECTS.

 CONTRIBUTIONS WENT TOWARDS: SCHOLARSHIPS ($1000) ANNUALLY, EYE EXAMINATIONS AND EYE GLASSES, GIRLS STATE AND BOYS STATE, THE EAST WINDSOR HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS CLUB, THE CLOSE-UP FOUNDATION, THE FIVE CORNER FOOD SHELF , THE AMERICAN SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF , THE E.W. VISITING NURSES ASSOCIATION , THE CONNECTICUT LIONS EYE RESEARCH FOUNDATION , THE LIONS GALLERY FOR THE SIGHTLESS, LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION AND CARE.

 SERVICE ACTIVITIES WERE: CO-SPONSORING WITH THE VISITING NURSES ASSOC. , A HEALTH FAIR WITH GLAUCOMA SCREENING AND OTHER MEDICAL RELATED SCREENING, ANNUAL DELIVERY OF COOKIES AND HAMS TO APPROXIMATELY 200 ELDERLY PEOPLE , PICKUP AND DELIVERY OF GOVERNMENT GIVE - AWAY CHEESE INCLUDING PAYING THE $1.10 PER CASE CHARGE AND OUR PARTICIPATION IN THE LIONS YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM. ONE CHILD OF A LION MEMBER HAS BEEN SENT TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY EACH OF THE PAST TEN YEARS, AND CLUB MEMBERS HAVE HOSTED MANY YOUNG PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES. CIVIC PROJECTS INCLUDED EQUIPMENT FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL GYM; GLASS BACK BOARDS & SCORE BOARD, LETTER JACKETS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES, CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND, EYE GLASSES FOR NEEDY PEOPLE, TO NAME A FEW. THE BIG EVENT WAS THE PURCHASE OF THE FIRST AMBULANCE FOR THE EAST WINDSOR AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION IN 1978.

 FUND-RAISERS WERE: AN ANNUAL GAME DINNER, AN ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP VARIETY SHOW, THEN LATER ON THE E.W. ROTARY CLUB JOINED IN ON A FEW SHOWS, AN ANNUAL SPRING AUCTION, AN ANNUAL TURKEY SHOOT, DURING THE LATE 60'S AND EARLY 70'S THE BEER FEST, FUEL RAFFLES AND ARMCHAIR HORSE RACING.    THE EAST WINDSOR LIONS HONORED TWO MEMBERS; WALTER E. COLTON; CHARTER MEMBER AND PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB, AND SIDNEY BALF; TREASURER FOR 26 YEARS WITH PERFECT ATTENDANCE.

  INFORMATIVE MEETINGS WERE HELD WITH SUMMARIES GIVEN BY THE YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENTS TELLING OF THEIR EXPERIENCES ABOUT THEIR TRAVELS AND VISITS WITH THEIR HOST FAMILIES IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY.
