Big Horn Lions Club Projects
Vision screening:  The Big Horn chapter aligns with Lion’s International with a long history of supporting the prevent of avoidable blindness and improving the quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired. In cooperation with the other Sheridan county Lions Clubs, the Big Horn Lions screen pre-kindergarten students in Sheridan County School Districts One and Three and Holy Name School in the spring and fall of each school year when asked to do so. Parents may use the referral information provided to secure additional evaluation with an eye care professional.

Sackett Memorial Park clean-up: The Big Horn Lions Club spends a Saturday morning in April, on or near Earth Day, preparing the Park for summer use. Weeds are removed, trees trimmed, and brush cut and removed. In the past, trees have been planted and picnic tables repaired and installed.

Mount Hope Cemetery clean up: During the week before Memorial Day, Big Horn Lions offer their manpower to getting the lawn area in the cemetery ready for Memorial Day and the summer season.

Gene Griffith/Jim Wilson Memorial Fishing Day:  Kindergarteners through 3rd graders from Big Horn Elementary School are invited to the Wilson Pond at the end of May and matched up with a BH Lion for an hour of supervised fishing.

Golf tournament: Since September 2022, the Big Horn Lions Club has sponsored a successful annual golf tournament at the Powder Horn Golf Club to raise funds for various entities. Plans are to continue this annual event.

2024 Big Horn Lions Contributions totaled $35,661
Due to the success of the golf tournament fundraisers, the following allocations were made:

Scholarship awards: $9,000
Big Horn High School seniors may apply for a one-year $1500 scholarship in March of each school year which is awarded to selected students at graduation. Six awardees received funds.

The Cemetery Board requested and received a significant donation to assist in purchasing headstones for unmarked graves. A donation was also made to the Big Horn Firefighters Association with respect for the members of the Big Horn Volunteer Departments efforts in combatting the Elk Fire.

Finance eye treatment: $8,647
In addition to screenings, donations were made to Sheridan Eye Care, WyoVision, Eye Care of the Big Horns, Rocky Mtn Lions Eye Bank, Rocky Mtn Lions Eye Institute, and Leader Dogs for the Blind. Financial assistance was provided for eye surgery of three individuals by Dr. Walker @Wyoming Eye Surgeons. Costs (10%) were shared with BHL, Sheridan Sundowners Lions and Story Lions, (80%) Rocky Mtn Eye Bank Surgery Fund, and (10%) Lions of Wyoming Foundation.

Special projects: $7,000
In appreciation of presenters at the monthly meetings, a gratuity was made to charities of their choice: Noah’s Art School and the Sheridan WYO Youth Choir.

In February 2024, Sgt. Nevada Krinkee was killed in the line of duty and a house was torn apart during a prolonged standoff with a man suspected of killing him. The deceased suspect was a single parent to two children. A memorial was given to the Krinkee family; a contribution was made to help rebuild the home;  and a donation was provided to the Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange.

Executive Committee:  The driving force behind the Lions Club is the executive committee which functions as the business end of the Lions Club. It is formed by members and officers of the club and meets on the third Thursday of each month except for December, June, and July.
