Jan-April
Lions Club Scholarships - Two scholarships for Towanda area high school graduates are available through the Towanda Lions Club. These two scholarships are in memory of former club members who contributed to both the club and the local community. More information is available here.
March/April
Easter Egg Hunt - Held the Saturday day before Easter. While the Community Building will be open for restrooms, we encourage everyone to meet at the park pavilion across the street for instructions for the event. There are three age groups, Infant - 3 yrs., 4 - 7, and 8 - 11. After the Egg Hunt, every kid will be given an individual sack to take home.
May
Towanda Elementary School Snow Cones - Members serve snow cones to students during their annual play day.
May-October
Highway Litter Control - Members pick up trash monthly along two miles of Towanda-Barnes Road south of Towanda. Starting at 9:00AM at the Towanda Legion on the Monday following the monthly club meeting. Weather permitting.
July
Towanda 4th of July Snow Cones - Members sell snow cones at their booth in the North Park. This is one of our two money maker projects.
Camp Lions Youth Campers Snow Cones - Members serve snow cones to Camp Lions Youth Camp campers for Low Vision/Blind and Hard of Hearing/Deaf campers at East Bay Camp, 24248 Ron Smith Memorial Highway, Hudson, IL. (click here for more information about Illinois Camp Lions Youth Camps).
October
Ham & Bean Dinner - The Ham & Bean Dinner is one of our two money makers. It is held the Friday evening after the club's October meeting.
December
Salvation Army Bell Ringing - Members volunteer to ring bells for Salvation Army at Krogers or Eisners on College Avenue.
Year Around
- Eye Glass Collection - Drop off old glasses at the Towanda Library or Towanda Community Building or with any Towanda Lions Club member.
- Small Change for Your Community - This project was inspired by an article in the monthly Lions magazine where a Lions club wanted to help their local library raise $10,000 by using containers to collect 1 million pennies. Our twist to the penny collection was to accept any type of change. Small Change for Your Community container is at the Towanda BP Gas Station 100% of the change collected is distributed quarterly to four local organizations: Towanda Elementary School, Towanda Library, Towanda American Legion, Towanda Fire Department.
- Towanda Caring Cupboard - The Towanda Lions Club is proud to sponsor a Caring Cupboard which is located at the Towanda Community Building - just south of the parking lot. This is a self serve cupboard open 24 hours a day providing nonperishable foods, personal care products, and paper products for anyone in need. NO GLASS ITEMS PLEASE. You can leave items or take what you need; however, please do not leave any items outside of the cupboard.
Take a blessing when you need one, give a blessing when you can, but above all be blessed.
