Towanda Lions Club Scholarships

Two scholarships for local high school graduates are available through the Towanda Lions Club. These two scholarships are in memory of former club members who contributed to both the club and the local community.

  • Steve Liebenow Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Steve Liebenow, a dedicated Lions Club member, educator, and community leader who passed away in 1999.  This scholarship is available to students pursuing an accociates or bachelors degree.

  • Towanda Lions Club Memorial Skilled Trades Scholarship is in memory of its members who have passed away since the club's founding in 1975. This scholarship is available to students pursuing a career in a skilled trades program.​​​

 


Steve Liebenow Memorial Scholarship

The Towanda Lions Club is pleased to sponsor a $750 Steve Liebenow Memorial Scholarship in honor of Steve Liebenow, a dedicated Lions Club member, educator, and community leader who passed away in 1999. This scholarship is a one-time award and is not open for renewal. Applicants not selected in a given year may reapply if they remain undergraduate college students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Graduating high school student planning to enroll in the fall at a college or university to pursue an associates or bachelors degree.
  2. Live in the Towanda area (zip code 61776) or in Towanda Township.
  3. Have at least a C average in your high school coursework (verified by your transcript).
  4. Submit your application by March 15, 2025.

This is a one-time scholarship; however, if you are not selected one year, you may reapply in future years as long as you are still pursuing an undergraduate program.

Applicants will need to provide the following Information:

  1. High School Activities: Include the name of each activity, a brief description (if necessary), and the years of participation.
  2. Community Service Activities: Mention the organization, role, description of service, and the years of participation.
  3. Employment History: Provide the employer’s name, your position, main responsibilities, and dates of employment.
  4. Biographical Profile: Write a concise profile about yourself (200 words or fewer). Focus on your background, goals, and what makes you a strong candidate.

Documents to Collect and Format:

  1. High School Transcript: Request an official copy from your school. Ensure it’s signed or sealed if required.
  2. Two Letters of Recommendation:
    1. One from a teacher, counselor, or administrator.
    2. One from a non-relative within the Towanda area. Contact your chosen individuals early, provide them with information about the application, and ensure they format the letters appropriately.
  3. Fall Class Schedule: Obtain a copy from your school or counselor. If not finalized, request a preliminary version.

Final Formatting and Storage:

  1. Save all written lists and the biographical profile in PDF or Microsoft Word format.
  2. Organize everything in clearly labeled files, e.g., High_School_Transcript.pdf, Recommendation_Letter_Teacher.docx.

Submission Process:

Complete and submit your online application by the official deadline posted on the Towanda Lions Club website. Alternatively, mail your application form, high school transcript, and letters of recommendation by the scholarship deadline to:

The Towanda Lions Club Scholarship Committee will review all submissions and select one scholarship recipient. All applicants will be notified by mail of the committee’s decision. The winning recipient must provide a copy of their fall semester class schedule from their college/university before the scholarship award is disbursed.

Towanda Lions Club Memorial Skilled Trades Scholarship

The Towanda Lions Club is proud to offer a $750 scholarship in memory of its members who have passed away since the club's founding in 1975. This scholarship is available to students pursuing a career in a skilled trades program, which includes fields such as carpentry, cosmetology, dental assisting, electrician work, heavy equipment operation, HVAC, machining, masonry, mechanics, plumbing, printing, and welding.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Graduating high school student planning to enroll in the fall in a skilled trades program.
  2. Live in the Towanda area (zip code 61776) or in Towanda Township.
  3. Have at least a C average in your high school coursework (verified by your transcript).
  4. Submit your application by March 15, 2025.
