Medical Research Project

Soldiers Point Lions Club is proud to be associated with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), a large and prestigious institute conducting world-class medical research. We are delighted to offer financial support Port Stephens local, Associate Professor Paul Tooney, in his work to improve treatments for brain cancer, one of the biggest killers of young people and babies.

These photos show the QUBIT 4 Fluorimeter, the Soldiers Point Lions and the Australian Lions Foundation collaborated on this project. The equipment will speed up detailed measurement of RNA, DNA and protein samples from the Hunter Cancer Biobank. Many scientists will have access to the equipment.

Warm Port Stephens Welcome for International Lions Students

Last week at Boat Harbour, while keeping an eye out for the majestic northbound whale migration, Colin Cameron, a member of the Lions Club of Soldiers Point, had a chance encounter that turned into something special. Colin met two members of the Forster Tuncurry Lions Club, easily recognised thanks to their Lions-branded mini-bus.

The group was international exchange students sponsored by the Lions International. staying in beautiful Port Stephens for a week, and the driver was proudly showing the area.

Within an hour, the story reached our local President James, who wasted no time suggesting a proper Lions-style welcome — a meal to remember. Phone calls were made, plans set in motion, and what followed was a true Lions collaboration.

By evening, sixteen local Soldiers Point Lions members met the group, arms full of roast leg of lamb with all the trimmings, and of course, a classic pavlova dessert. They were joined by the Forster Tuncurry Lions and the ten international students from Spain, the USA, France, Italy, Brazil, and Slovenia.

The evening was filled with laughter, delicious food, and meaningful conversation. As the night wound down, each student took a moment to introduce themselves and speak briefly about their home — a heartfelt connection that we hope will be mirrored when they return and share their Australian experience back home.

It was a wonderful night of fellowship, friendship, and food, showcasing what the Lions spirit is all about. The meal, lovingly prepared by our President James and our amazing team, was enjoyed by our hungry guests.

A big thank you to all involved in making this spontaneous event a roaring success! July 2025
