What we do at our Eyeglass Sorting Events. Volunteers sort donated eyeglasses into usable glasses, scratched and broken glasses, and glasses with precious metal components.
Usable Glasses: Undergo further processing, which include:
- Washing
- Sorting by type (bifocals, single vision, reading, etc.);
- Determining the eyeglass prescription strength using a lensometer
- Packaging in preparation for distribution (individually bagging each pair of glasses; then boxing the glasses according to prescription)
- Delivering them to the Arizona Lions Eyeglass Recycling Terminal, Inc. (ALERT, Inc.) in Tucson for additional processing.
- Finally, the eyeglasses are ready for distribution around the world.
Distribution: Lions Clubs and other volunteer humanitarian groups distribute the glasses "at-no-cost" to less fortunate individuals in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.
Scratched and Broken Glasses are donated to other non-profit organizations for further recycling.
Glasses with Precious Metal Components are separated from the others at the beginning of the sorting process. The precious metal is sold, and the profits are used to purchase equipment and supplies used in the recycling program.
Our Lions eyeglass recycling programs make a lasting impact on thousands of lives, one person at a time.
YOU CAN TOO!!!
Interested in collecting glasses for our Southern Arizona Lions Clubs or taking part in eyeglass recycling - we would love to have your help!
