HISTORY OF THE LIONS CLUB OF PORT OF SPAIN CENTRAL

The Lions Club of Port of Spain Central (formerly Trinidad North Lions Club) is the first Lions Club formed in Trinidad and Tobago and is Incorporated by Act No. 35 of 1980. The Club was started as Trinidad North in 1962 by Past District Governor Lion Luis Enrique Mesa, and assisted by former Lion Ramon Fabres. Trinidad North was used with the thinking that should another club form, it would be referred to as Trinidad South. However the North Club was later renamed to Port of Spain Central.

Past District Governor Lion Mesa spoke Spanish fluently but very little English which resulted in Charter Members being inducted in a language foreign to them, which led to all subsequent correspondence with Lions Club International (LCI) being in Spanish.

In 1963 the Club joined Provisional District "P" which at the time consisted of Suriname, Guyana and Barbados. It was in the presence of visiting Lions from these clubs, Charter President, Lion Dr. Dave Wyke recieved the Charter from District Governor, Lion Jan van Marion of Suriname  in a ceremony held at the Trinidad Hilton on the 11th of May 1963.

While the Charter was recieved in May 1963, the Chater was dated May 22nd, 1962 - the actual date of the Club's formation. The Charter Members of the Lions Club of Port of Spain Central (formerly Trinidad North) are: Dr. David Wyke - President, Ramon Fabres - 1st Vice President, Dr.Carl Lee - 2nd Vice President, Victor Mouttet - 3rd Vice President, Dr. Edward Moses - Secretary, Oscar Francois - Director, Michael Taylor -Director, Dr. Roy Leung - Director, John Hoating -Director, J.Aboud, R.Matouk, A.Fabres, R.Rodrigues, K.Johnston and W. Sondon.

In 1975 the Lions Clubs of Trinidad and Tobago received the Public Service Medal of Merit - Gold for Community Service. This medal is currently displayed in the Den, of the Lions Club of Port of Spain Central.Today the Lions Club of Port of Spain Central remains vibrant and continues to play a major role in Lionism within Trinidad and Tobago and the Region.
