Tribute to
Lion Joe Tasca (1935 – 2024)
by Lion Manny Perira

Lion Joe was “one of a kind”.

From the moment I met Lion Joe about 33 years ago, I felt an immediate affinity for him. I liked his integrity and demeanour, the strength of his convictions and the honesty he always brought to his interactions with other Lions. When he felt the need to do so, he never hesitated in calling a spade a spade. There was never another way, like it or not. I always admired that in him.

We all know that first and foremost, Lion Joe loved his family with all his heart. But thankfully, his heart was large enough to also love the Lions and everything we stand for. His kindness was reflected in his actions, rather than words.

Over many years, I cannot remember an event where Lion Joe was not present. He was either organizing it or doing his share of the work, and then some. His love for this community and the Lions work was undeniable. It was his desire, to serve.

For decades, Lion Joe chaired the “Senior’s dinner”. The memories of these events are endless. Lion Joe’s attention to detail, to the assignment of the different tasks, from the set-up crew, the cooks, to the servers and clean-up crew, was incredible. Watching him in action, was something to behold. Like a drill sergeant, Lion Joe expected nothing less than perfect execution. And to make sure of it, he would be giving orders left, right and centre.  Having had the army experience, I always felt that should anyone fail to do the job right, the order to do 50 push-ups right there and then, was never far away. Thanks to Lion Joe, the job was always done to perfection. Seamless. It’s no wonder that he was so much loved and respected by the older residents in town.

The epidemic, as we all know, changed a lot of things. In our case, it put an end to the Senior’s dinner; and our in-person dinner meetings gave way to zoom meetings.

At some point, early in the pandemic, I became the Club’s secretary and every couple of weeks, I would drop by Lion Joe’s home to visit and chat, and deliver the Minutes of the recent meeting, something which has since carried on. I eagerly took those opportunities to enjoy many of Lion Joe’s thoughts, memories and stories.

Lion Joe had an incredible story-telling ability. Blessed with a fantastic memory for detail, Lion Joe’s recollections of events, people and places amazed me every single time. I marveled at his ability to paint a picture with words, in such a way, that made me feel as if I had been there and had witnessed it all. These were no snap-shots; rather these were small “vignettes” which, to my delight, he was able to bring to life. I will, very much, miss those moments.

Lion Joe is and will continue to be a source of inspiration to us all. May he rest in peace with Bernice by his side.

New Members Welcome

Many long term friendships have started at a Lions Club meeting. The best way for you to make a decision regarding your future affiliation with our progressive club is to accept our invitation to attend a regular dinner meeting. Enjoy the light-hearted atmosphere among our members, and appreciate our commitment to your community. Many of our members meet socially during July and August when there are no scheduled meetings. We start our dinner with the following prayer:

O Lord Thy blessings
Now let fall
Upon the Lions as they call,
May all our ties of friendship be
For ever, strengthened
Lord by Thee.
