2022-23 Lions Club Projects

The Korumburra Lions Club is Back at Work!

After a remarkably successful membership drive, the Club now has 31 members. The new members of the Korumburra Lions Club have brought a range of new skills and are already applying themselves to help out in the community.

Response to Facebook Community Request

In early 2022 we went out through our Facebook page seeking community assistance on what projects would be good to undertake for the Lion's Club. Well we have been overwhelmed by suggestions and ideas of what Korumburrra needs. Many of these requests are beyond what we as a Community Club can do, however they are important, and we have forwarded all the suggestions to our councilors for their information and consideration. We have also informed other community bodies of the results and will present this to the Korumburra Round Table.

The link below has a table summarizing the findings and ranks the importance of the different suggested projects in order according to interest generated on the Facebook page. Please take the time to look at what your fellow citizens have said.

We thank you for your participation in this exercise and as a Club re now looking to see what we can do over the course of the coming year.

Current Active Projects

Community Help

The Next Club Barbeque and Food Drive for Milpara will be on 20th April 2023

For the last 2 years we have been running this event to collect nonperishable food for the Milpara Community House Food Bank. The people of Korumburra have been great in supporting this food drive and we will have contributed may thousands of dollars to the food bank to be distributed to those in need.  The first of these projects is to run regular Food Drives to help top up the supplies at the Milpara Food Bank. With the tough times we’ve had over the past year or more, there is a greater demand for assistance in the area, and of course food is high on the list of requirements.

Milpara Community House, in conjunction with Vinnies in Korumburra, does a great job of providing goods to needy people, but food supplies are getting low. Enter the Korumburra Lions Club who will be running the 5th Food Drive.

The great people of Korumburra have contributed nonperishable items including noodles, rice, pasta, pasta sauce, tinned tomatoes, tinned spaghetti, tinned meals and soup.

Community Assets

Rail Trail Shelter - Beautification and Refurbishment

With the Great Southern Rail Trail being extended from Leongatha to Nyora and passing right through our town of Korumburra, the Club is developing the Wayside Stop built by the Lions Club of Korumburra in 1999. The shelter and picnic area needing TLC so we have started building a new garden area to beautify the area as well as putting in new seating and a community noticeboard. New signage is required to direct visitors to the town as well as to points of interest on the Rail Trail in both directions.

Community Youth

Music Scholarship for Korumburra Secondary College

The Club has continued with the music scholarship program at the Korumburra Secondary College. This year we are sponsoring four new 1/2 scholarships for music lessons in 2023. This is being done in conjunction with the music program that is run by the five major secondary schools in South Gippsland, working with the dedicated teaching staff. The scholarship would offer financial support to students who otherwise could not afford the lessons, instruments or music camps that are critical to the program's structures. The South Gippsland Schools Music Program is seen as a valuable part of education for our community's young people.

Sporting Scholarships

The Lions Club in conjunction with the Gippsland Sports Academy has agreed to sponsor two students with part golfing scholarships to improve their game as they look to make a career in this sport.

The Ross Smith Award this year went to Liam Thomas. Congratulations. The award is given to a student who gives they're all across a with variety of activities. Well done.
