Genki Ball Project
The Ala Wai Canal Genki Ball Project is a community-driven environmental effort focused on restoring the health of the canal through bioremediation.
Started in 2019, the project brings together students, teachers, volunteers, and local organizations to create and throw “Genki Balls” — mud balls filled with Effective Microorganisms® (EM®) — into the canal to help break down sludge, reduce odors, and improve water quality. Inspired by successful cleanup efforts in Japan, the project’s vision is to make the Ala Wai Canal fishable and swimmable again while educating the community about environmental stewardship and mālama ʻāina.
The Aloha Pono Lions Club proudly supports this important environmental project and its mission to protect and restore Hawaiʻi’s natural resources.
