Children's Vision Screening
The Cornwall Lions will be performing vision screening in local and area pre-schools and elementary schools utilizing a newly acquired plusoptiX Vision Screener. It is designed to screen for refractive error, anisocoria and strabismus in children starting at age 6 months. Vision Screening can be performed in any child because the only compliance needed is a short fixation on the camera.
Refraction, pupil sizes and corneal reflexes are measured and compared to age based referral criteria automatically. Referral criteria are:
- Anisometropia - compares refraction of both eyes
- Astigmatism - checks corneal irregularities
- Hyperopia - checks farsightedness
- Myopia - checks nearsightedness
- Corneal reflexes - checks symmetric eye alignment
- Anisocoria - compares pupil sizes of both eyes
An immediate assessment can be provided to the parents to enable them to follow up with their pediatrician.
The Cornwall Lions Club provides these screenings in collaboration with the Lions SEE Program at the Ira G. Ross Eye Institute. Contact us for information on upcoming screenings.

The World Health Organization estimates that the eyesight of one-fourth of the world’s population can be improved through the use of corrective lenses. That translates to 500 million people who could easily have improved vision. Recycling a pair of eyeglasses costs as little as eight cents; however, the expense for correcting poor vision is astronomical to those in developing countries. In many countries an eye exam costs as much as one month’s wages.
Even if one can afford these exorbitant costs, seeing a doctor is very difficult, for there is often only one doctor for hundreds of thousands of people. Poor eyesight that is left untreated can cause blindness or force adults into unemployment; however, in many developing areas there is little choice. Recycled eyeglasses are typically sent overseas due to legal constraints.
Lions Eye Bank
The Sight Society of Northeastern NY, Inc. (Lions Eye Bank at Albany) serves 29 counties in Northeastern New York and Great Barrington, MA. The Lions Eye Bank at Albany has helped to restore vision to tens of thousands of people who might otherwise have permanently lost their sight.
The first priority is to obtain corneal tissue for individuals residing in Northeastern New York and Great Barrington, MA. We also provide corneal tissue to people throughout the world. Tissue that cannot be used for transplant is valuable for research and educational purposes.
