Last night at our club dinner meeting 1st May one of our members, Amanda Maystone-Towell who heads up the YMCA School Breakfast Program gave a really great presentation about the program.
The Brisbane Macgregor Lions Club has frequently provided funding to assist this very important work in ensuring thousands of children obtain a nourishing breakfast which regretfully is not available from their home.
Nutritional food enhances the learning capability of students. The YMCA School Breakfast Program commenced in 2006 and is now operational in 239 schools in South East Queensland as well as a further 140 statewide.
In March this year 137,428 breakfasts were served.
Some very sobering facts:
- On average, 3 students in every classroom will arrive to school hungry or without having eaten breakfast
- Teachers estimate that the average student loses more than 2 hours of learning time per day if they have not had a nutritional breakfast
- The need is growing as so far in the 2023-2024 year there has been a staggering increase of 22% in breakfasts provided

Bridge to Brisbane Volunteer Wrap Up... Thank you!
First of all, WOW! What a great day it was on Sunday. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.
It was amazing to meet you during the process leading up to this event and even better to witness such greatness on event day. Most times people don’t understand why I love my job so much but it’s all because I get to meet and work with wonderful people like you.
On behalf of The Sunday Mail, Transurban and my whole team at EMS, I want to say THANK YOU for being so awesome. You’ve heard me say it before but I will say it again.. this event would not pe possible without people/teams like yours.
I would love to hear any feedback (both good and bad) that you might have. This could include pre-event communication, what worked and what didn’t around your station, even any suggestions for next year. If you took any photos that you wouldn’t mind sharing, I’d also love a copy of them.
I look forward to hearing back from you and hope to see you at next year’s event! 😊
Kind regards,
Event Management Solutions

Congratulations to Narelle Wyvill-Anstey
The dinner meeting on 20 October viewed a one-minute video slideshow highlighting the contribution that Narelle has made to the community over the last few years. Her campaign for the Westfield Local Hero was successful resulting in her winning $10,000 for the Club to distribute equally to five charities that she had nominated. The music to the slideshow was appropriately an extract from the Dire Straits well-known album "Local Hero".
Our photo shows President Kathlyn presenting on behalf of all Club members a beautiful orchid plant to Narelle after congratulating her on her success.
