Bridge to Brisbane Volunteer Wrap Up... Thank you!

First of all, WOW! What a great day it was on Sunday. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.

It was amazing to meet you during the process leading up to this event and even better to witness such greatness on event day. Most times people don’t understand why I love my job so much but it’s all because I get to meet and work with wonderful people like you.

On behalf of The Sunday Mail, Transurban and my whole team at EMS, I want to say THANK YOU for being so awesome. You’ve heard me say it before but I will say it again.. this event would not pe possible without people/teams like yours.

I would love to hear any feedback (both good and bad) that you might have. This could include pre-event communication, what worked and what didn’t around your station, even any suggestions for next year. If you took any photos that you wouldn’t mind sharing, I’d also love a copy of them.

I look forward to hearing back from you and hope to see you at next year’s event! 😊

Kind regards,

Event Management Solutions

Guest speaker Cheryl Desha Wednesday night dinner meeting 15.06.2022

Born on the island of Mauritius Cheryl migrated to Australia in 1981. After primary school at Wishart State School, she went to Moreton Bay College in the 1980s for secondary schooling. During secondary school she spent a year away on exchange in Japan when she was 14 on a scholarship exchange in 1992.

She entered the Lions Youth of the Year competition in 1994, and subsequently was inspired to study environmental engineering at Griffith University to 'make a difference'.

Cheryl graduated in 1999 from her degree with first class honours and a university medal for her achievements in obtaining a Grade Point Average of 6.9 out of 7.0.

She went on to work for Arup - an engineering design company - before returning to Griffith to become an academic in 2004, inspired by the opportunity to join a sustainability think tank. Over the next 10 years she finished her PhD in rapid capacity building, co-authored 7 books on sustainability, and more than 150 publications.

Over the last 6 years Cheryl has turned to disaster management as an agenda that is urgent and critical in the pursuit of sustainable development. Her proudest achievement is the new "N79" building for teaching on Nathan campus which also includes a Disaster and Resilience Management Facility.

In 2020 the Qld Government awarded her the annual 'Change Champion' award on International Women's Day. Last year Engineers Australia awarded her the Queensland Professional Engineer of the Year award. This year she was also profiled on the cover of the Engineers Australia national magazine, January edition.

Congratulations to Narelle Wyvill-Anstey

The dinner meeting on 20 October viewed a one-minute video slideshow highlighting the contribution that Narelle has made to the community over the last few years. Her campaign for the Westfield Local Hero was successful resulting in her winning $10,000 for the Club to distribute equally to five charities that she had nominated. The music to the slideshow was appropriately an extract from the Dire Straits well-known album "Local Hero".

Our photo shows President Kathlyn presenting on behalf of all Club members a beautiful orchid plant to Narelle after congratulating her on her success.

Early Chid Education Centre built in Fiji

Our Member Sam Prasad has forwarded the photo below of the Early Child Education Centre built in Fiji. $5,000 which were donated by Lions Club of Brisbane Macgregor went towards the cost of the building.

The funds were raised partly by cash collection by Club Members at Garden City Shopping Centre in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston in March 2016.

As one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere, tropical cyclone (TC) Winston and its 185-mph winds caused widespread devastation across the island nation of Fiji when it made landfall February 19-20. The storm was one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall anywhere on earth since the modern era of global records began in 1970.
