Also volulunteering with us was Jamie Moses. Jamie is running as the NDP candidate for the new riding of 'St. Vital'. Jamie Moses has worked in leadership roles at Investors Group, technology company Rapid RTC and the Canadian Wheat Board.

He serves on the board of several local organizations including Glenwood Community Centre, the Glenwood parent advisory council and the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre. It sometimes takes a community to build a garden.

The St. Vital Agricultural Society has been busy laying the foundations for its Sesquicentennial Community Garden, which was officially opened at an event on Nov. 14. The community garden is the long-running organization’s Canada 150 anniversary project, according to key organizer and SVAS director Karen Fontaine. She said the society applied for a grant for the project from 150 Alliance in partnership with Lions Club International and Diabetes Canada.

Located on Bishop Grandin Greenway southeast of where Glen Meadow Street meets St. Michael Road, the idea is that community members with an interest in the project can apply to maintain a plot in the garden.

"I love this location because it’s got a special feel to it," said Fontaine, who lives in St. Vital, noting SVAS has leased the land for the project from the City of Winnipeg. "This grassroots project is about making unusable land usable."

Thw Winnipeg South Lions Club has ordered a park bench and plaque to be erected at the site of the St. Vital Ag Society Garden to support their initiative and celebrate our 100th anniversary year of Lions giving! The bench will be in place by June 2018 for our gardeners to use as a break after working their plots on the Bishop Grandin Greenway!

Well done Lions!

The Winnipeg South Lions Club was provided an opportunity by Impact Security - the Security partner of the Winnipeg Football Club, to provide volunteers for a brand new program to transport mobility challenged Blue Bomber fans from the 4 parking areas at Investors Group Field to the gates for entry into the game. At the end of the season the Winnipeg South Lions Club received a cheque from Impact Security for $5,000 for our season long volunteering - including some very cold fall games with snow, ice and cold north winds. All in a Lion's day of work!

In 2018 we have been afforded the opportunity to continue with this program and will once again be driving golf carts - shuttling fans to and from the game. The Winnipeg South Lions would like to thank the Winnipeg Footbal Club and Impact Security, and their team, for the opprotunity to continue to facilitate this program in 2018!
