Windsor Lions' Service Projects

"Where there is a need, there is a LION"

 

Vision Initiatives

The Windsor Lions have been screening pre-school and day care children in Windsor.   to detect eyesight issues that might go undetected until the children are older.  This year we completed our first Senior Citizen eye screening checking acuity, possible glaucoma and retina issues.  The Windsor Lions Eyecare Fund provides glasses to any Windsor resident who qualifies through Social Services

The Windsor Lions Club is committed to Blind American Equality and in collaboration with CRIS Radio have outfitted the Tobacco Museum at Northwest Park with QR codes making history come alive for low vision and print disabled people.

The Windsor Lions donates funds to the Windsor Library and the Wilson Branch for large print books.

The Windsor Lions Club participates in the Lions Low Vision Center. The Lions Low Vision Centers provide glare control, magnification devices, telescopic devices, lighting, rehabilitation, teaching in the use of aids and devices, adaptive technology, safety, mobility issues, and counseling in adapting to vision loss for those who qualify.

The Windsor Lions collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids, refurbishing them and distributing to those in need.

 

Pediatric Cancer

The Windsor Lions participate in the Great Cycle Challenge each year, Lions pledge to ride their bikes for a certain number of miles and with their sponsors they ride to “kick cancer’s butt.”  The Windsor Lions donate to Camp Rising Sun each year.  Camp Rising Sun provides a fun experience for children diagnosed with cancer and for their families.

 

Youth Initiatives 

The Windsor Lions provides three scholarships, totaling $4500.00 each year to graduating high school seniors who are a Windsor resident The recipient can be graduating from any high school as long as they are a Windsor resident.  

The Windsor Lions Club sponsors The Leo Club at Sage Park, for youth from 13-18.  LEO, standing for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity is the largest service organization for youth in the world.  Leos have done service for the Windsor Food and Fuel Bank, CCMC, Pediatric Cancer and Weekend Wheels to name a few.

The Windsor Lions is involved in Project Graduation with a charitable donation and service.

The Windsor Lions sponsor in collaboration with other Lions Clubs, a Special Education Christmas Party where students from Windsor enjoy fun, music and a visit from Santa.

The Windsor Lions are supporters of Windsor’s Project Santa.  A special fundraiser, Breakfast Sandwich “A Go Go” is held with all proceeds going to help Windsor families have a more joyful holiday.

The Windsor Lions donate 4 Ever car seats to Covenant to Care for Children

 

Hunger Initiatives

The Windsor Lions Club holds two drive thru food drives yearly.  Last year more than 2,000 lbs. of food and more than $1500,00 was collected.  

The Windsor Lions were also able to provide fresh food to the food bank from the Farm to Families Program distributed by our District 23B.  Windsor Lions went to Terryville, picked up food and returned to Windsor with the fresh food.  Presently, the Windsor Lions are participating in a Food Insecurity Grant for $10,000.00 from Lions Club International, where Windsor Lions go to Terryville to get non-perishable food items for distribution to Windsor residents through the food bank.

 

Blood Drives

The Windsor Lions Club, in collaboration with the American Red Cross holds two Blood Drives each year.  Our last service project positively impacted the lives of 165 people with units of blood collected.

 

WILA

The Windsor Lions provides a service project for residents of WILA, Windsor Independent Living Association consisting of bingo, ice cream socials, a photo booth and a DJ.

 

Environmental Projects

The Windsor Lions Club is collaborating with the Windsor Monarch Project to create an upcycled planter, and with the Windsor Library to bring a program to focus awareness of environmental concerns to Windsor residents.

The Windsor Lions provide a booth at their Spring and Fall Craft Fairs for “Voices Against Lyme Disease” to provide awareness about Lyme disease to our community.

 

Diabetes Awareness

The Windsor Lions in collaboration with Eastern Connecticut Health Network, has a booth at our Spring and Fall Arts and Craft Fair to bring awareness of the health risks associated with diabetes to our community.

Windsor Lions' Annual Community Support

The Windsor Lions donate thousands of dollars back to our community each year.  For this year, 2021-22, the Windsor Lions were able to increase our charitable donations.
