Through various fund raising projects through the years, the West Bend Lioness Lion’s Club has purchased and donated to St. Joseph Community Hospital a set of Patient Education Tapes and a bassinet for the nursery. A Braille reading machine was purchased for a local girl and eyeglasses were purchased for those in need. We contributed toward the purchase of Jaws of Life, presented a TDD Machine (phone service) for the deaf to the Washington County Sheriff’s Dept. and presented a check of $2,700 for a communications system for the Washington County Dive Team. Annually we donate to the Samaritan Health Center, the Food Pantry, the Threshold and the Dr. Albrecht Free Clinic. We gave Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to needy families; and generous donations to the Fight for Sight Fund to build the Eye Bank in Madison and annually we support the WI Lions Foundation and Lion’s Camp. .
In the Fall of 1985 through 1992, we presented, through the auspices of Channel 10-36, a Sesame Street Fire Safety Program together with the West Bend Fire Department to all Pre-Schools in the District.
In 1988, we started placing Lion’s Mints in community business places with the proceeds providing two scholarships each year for two of our “Lioness Lion Students of the Month”. We now receive this money from our Terri Lynn Nut Sales. We honor two high school senior students each month as “Lioness Lion Students of the Month”. The high school guidance counselors choose these students. At the end of the school year, two names are randomly chosen from the 18 students to receive a scholarship.
Since 1989, the Club has been active in the Child Abuse Prevention Program. Each April, National Child Abuse Prevention month, we distribute pamphlets to the clinics, various stores and the Library to spread awareness of this problem. For many years we prepared for mailing, the Parenting Newsletters for new parents, for the hospital.
Our collaborative efforts can be seen throughout the community. Our club helped fund a service dog, placed Braille menus to local restaurants, provided vision screening in schools and put together kits for the homeless, organized Bingo Parties, served soup at Enchantment in the Park, created an educational Butterfly Garden at the West Bend Community Library and a fishing deck at Ridge Run Park and contributed for a defibrillator for the Senior Center.
Our main fundraisers at this time are: Terri Lynn Nut and Candy Sales, County Fair Corn Rosast and a Fish Fry in May..
