The Taneytown Lions Club was organized June 24, 1947, and chartered September 9, 1947, with 29 charter members. Over these many years, the Lions have conducted literally hundreds of public service activities and raised money for many local projects as well as aid to the down and out.

A number of pavilions in the Taneytown Memorial Park were built through the efforts of the Taneytown Lions.

The Taneytown Little League Baseball program was begun in 1953 under the sponsorship of the Lions. The Club also built the first ball field and dugouts. That program has grown tremendously since that time, with the Lions still making a significant annual contribution. Today, some of the children who played on the Little League teams are now Lions members.

The Taneytown Lions Club, through various fund-raising projects, provides donations and help to many local causes as well as significant contributions to the MD Eye Bank, the Lions Vision Research Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Leader Dog Program.

Each year the Club awards a scholarship to a deserving High School graduate from this area, as well as sponsoring an essay, peace poster, and art and science contests.

There are increasingly more and more requests each year for help for needy individuals in the community for eye exams, surgical procedures, eyeglasses, and loan of medical equipment. The club purchased a building in 2003 for the purpose of storing hospital equipment and other supplies.

In addition to these traditional causes, the club made and fulfilled a significant commitment to the Lions Vision Research Foundation Endowment Fund at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Also in 2004 the club made a $10,000 commitment to the Carroll County Hospice, to be paid over 5 years. This commitment was fulfilled in just 3 years.

In 2007 the club made a significant commitment of funds to the Lions International's Campaign Sight First II, to help alleviate preventable blindness around the world. The club committed to being a Model Club and was recognize at the District Convention.

It requires many members working many hours on fund raising project to support the club's budget. Early Fund-raisers included a Crab Feed in the summer and Oyster/Shrimp Feed in the winter.  As these became less profitable and risky, in 1980 the club began sponsoring two Pancake Breakfasts a year - the third Saturday in March and the third Saturday in November.  Other annual fund raisers include Basket Bingo, Quarterly Drawings (f.k.a "10 week Club"), sales of holiday fruit cakes and gourmet nuts. In addition, our Food Trailer has been used at various other community events.

The club has worked hard, made our community a better place to live, and had a lot of fun since our start in 1947. The club continues to grow and we hope to do even more in the years ahead.
