The main project of all Lions Clubs is sight conservation. Local Lions provide eye examinations and eye glasses for the needy in the local community at no charge. Programs dealing with Drug, Alcohol and Diabetes awareness are also provided. South Carolina Lions support The Leader Dog for the Blind School in Rochester, Michigan.
A major project for the Spartanburg Lions Club is the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. Each year we provide a Christmas experience for the students of the SC School of Deaf and Blind (SCSDB). This includes providing each student a Christmas gift, hosting a Christmas party, attending a Christmas luncheon hosted by the school, in which we are entertained by some of its students. We also access special financial needs of the school to fund. An annual scholarship from the Lion's Club Foundation is awarded to a deserving SCSDB student to attend Spartanburg Technical College.
A major state project is the South Carolina Lions Eye Bank, Inc.. The South Carolina Lions Eye Bank was organized in 1957 and is charged with procuring, processing, and distributing safe, viable eye tissue for transplant, research and education. Since 1957, over 5,300 people have received a cornea transplant through the South Carolina Lions Eye Bank. The Lions of South Carolina have secured over 147,000 eye donors. The South Carolina Lions Eye Bank is located at The Lions Building in West Columbia, S. C., with satellite eye banks located at The Storm Eye Institute at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, and in The Greenville Hospital System Area, Greenville, South Carolina.
