Walk To Defeat ALS

For the seventh year in a row, South Orange Lion Elaine Marlowe and family members participated in the North Jersey Walk to Defeat ALS in Saddle Brook New Jersey sponsored by the ALS Association (www.alsa.org).  Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.

Elaine’s team, Kall to Action, includes several of her family members who dedicated their walk to their mother, Elaine Kall Marlowe, who died from ALS at the young age of 58 and to their dear friend, Arthur Cohen who, before his death, founded PickALS as an ongoing fundraiser to battle ALS and to provide assistance to those afflicted with the disease.

This year, as she has done in the past, Elaine also volunteered on the morning of the walk assisting with walker registration and check in.

Lion Elaine, current Membership Chair and past President who received the 2018 Melvin Jones award said “This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.  Being part of this event for the last 7 years is both rewarding and sorrowful. While I mourn for the special people with ALS I have come to love and lost, my hope is that someday we can eradicate the disease altogether.  That is why I walk.”
