COATS FOR KIDS & ADULTS 2023

There will NOT be a collection drive this year. We want to sincerely thank the residents of Bourne and Sandwich who generously supported our efforts over the past nine years. During that time we transported over four thousand coats to Anton's for cleaning and distribution.

We want to also thank the mangement and staff of the organization at our various collection sites. Over the years they always found a good location  for our collection boxes

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT

This year Anton's asked that we no longer deliver hats, scarves, mittens, gloves, etc. as they had no process to distribute these items. These items, plus inappropriate coats, will be donated to the organizations that have collection bins at the Sandwich Transfer Station

Collections this year started out with a burst of donations. Several collections sites reported that they had received coats before the actual collections were scheduled to begin. By November 2 we had collected 82 coats

Then collections slowed as the temps in early November were above normal. This is the phenomena we've observed since we started collecting for Anton's. Early donations are very dependent on the temperatures we experience

This year the Boune Public Library has been our busiest collection site. Last year the Sandwich COA, and the Rockland Trust Bank on Claypond Rd, shared the honor of contributing the Lions share of the coats ( I couldn't help myself)

As the temperatures decreased, our collections increased. On November 18 we delivered 84 coats to the  Marshfield's Anton's cleaners. On the 30th we made a delivery of 103 coats.

Collections were steady throughout December and on December 15  we made the single biggest delivery to date, with 123 coats. This filled my car to capacity, and I was concerned that a late month surge in donations might force me to use use a second vehicle to deliver all the coats

Collections slowed down a little prior to Christmas, but were steady with all the collection sites continuing to function. On the last day of this year's drive, I received a call from the coach of the Cape Cod Firefish Swim Team, They had taken up a collection, and she had 45 coats to donate.

Of the 45 coats, 39 were appropriate and were added to what had already been collected, and sorted. The last of the coats arrived today. After sorting these, we had a total of 163 coats that needed to be delivered. Unfortunately, Anton's is not open today, Jan. 2, so I may be delivering in the rain tomorrow.

Our total collections for 2022 were 555 coats. We probably collected more than 600 coats, but as noted above, we still continue to receive a number of light weight summer jackets, rain coats, etc.

Our thanks to the residents of Bourne and Sandwich for their continued support of the worthy cause. We truly appreciate their continued generosity.

Our thanks to the organizations that support our efforts, by permitting us to set up collection bins in your facilities. These include Rockland Trust, Stop and Shop, Eastern Bank, Bourne and Sandwich Council's on Aging, and the Bourne Public Library

My personal thanks to the Lions who have assised me in this on-going service project. Lions Donna, Dianne, and Larry.

Best wishes to all for a wonderful and healty 2023. See you all again next year.

Lion Randy

This yars drive is off to slow start. Perhaps, it's been the warm temps, or that folks did most of their cleaning out during the height of the pandemic. We are about a third of the way through this years drive, and we have only 80 appropriate coats

.

While we didn't expect to hit last years sensational number of 729 coats, we had hopes of collecting, at least, 400 coats. We may still be able to reach this number, if the temps drop and folks do some pre-holiday sorting and cleaning out.

We have received a large number of hats, mittens, scarves, etc, including three bags of hand-made garments in the Sandwich COA collection box

,We have also collected a reasonable number of inappropriate garments...spring coats and sweat shirts, baseball caps, pants, raincoats, etc

These will be donated ot other service organizations, or stored and made part of our Savers deliivery.

We hope to report a significant increase in the donations in the next update.

I am pleased to report that since our first delivery, we have made two additional trips to Anton's in Marshfield.

On November 30 we delivered 101 additional coats.

This past Tuesday, Dec. 14 an additional 165 coats were dropped off. This delivery included an unusally large number of gloves, scarves, hats, etc.  Many being, either, new or hand made.

At this rate we should easily collect 400, and possibly 500 coats.  Our thanks to those who have contributed, especially those folks using the box at the Sandwich  COA, who have already donated 6 large bags of coats.

As expected with cooler temps the donations at all locations improved. Unfortunately, the donations in East Sandwich, with the exception of the COA, were significantly down from last year.

We did receive an, unexpected donation from a local sports team. Members of the Cape Cod Firefish Swim Team donated over 80 coats. This organization also supported the Sandwich Food Pantry by collecting a car load of food at the polar plunge that they held on January 1

Below is a picture of the team's coach, Trish Condiff, and the van load of coat she delivered for sorting and transport to Antons.

As noted above, the Sandwich COA has continued to be a great collection location. This year we collected 8 55gallon plastic bags from their collection box.

Since the December 14 delivery, we collected an additional 251 coats. This brought the total for this year's drive to 597 coats. There was also a significant number of hats, scarves, gloves and mittens

Below is a picture of the last load of coats being prepared for delivery. It required 15 55 gallon bags to load all the coats

We want to thank all the folks who contributed to the success of this year's drive.

We appriciate the participation of all the collection sites and look forward to their continued cooperation during the 2022 drive
