The San Juan/Barataria Lions Club (SanBar) celebrates 40 years of service, at the end of this fiscal year after being sponsored by the Port of Spain East Lions Club and receiving its Charter on 10th July, 1981.
In 1989 after recording an all male membership of forty five (45), seventeen (17) of whom were eventually dropped for varied reasons, the club was placed into status quo. Nonetheless, the veterans of the club were not deterred and with a decision to include females, launched a massive membership drive which netted 16 new female members. Hence creating history in October 1990 with the induction of its first female members, who have contributed significantly to the club’s success.
Then fiscal year 1991/1992 saw SanBar's first female President, Lion Joanne Ferguson who went on to become Charter President of the D'Abadie Lions Club, and, six (6) of the seventeen (17) female members being elected to the Board of Directors. Over the years, members of the club have served at most, if not all, levels of lionisim, notably in the capacity of District and Region Chairs.
At SanBar the Board of Directors serve for a period of two (2) years. Committees are also an integral part of our club’s functionality.
SanBar has also played its part in club sponsorship. In 1991 the Petit Juan Lions Club was sponsored by SanBar. Petit Juan Lions Club continues to make great strides in lionism. In addition, The D’Abadie Branch Club was sponsored by SanBar and within one (1) year was confirmed as a Lions Club, on June 27, 2017. D’Abadie Lions Club held a successful charter ceremony on 30th September, 2017 under the guidance of our very own Lion Melissa Borel along with Lion Angela McAllister.
