Royal Oak Lions Club Academic Scholarship

The Royal Oak Lions Club provides scholarships for post-secondary education in amounts of up to $1250. Scholarships are available to students who have graduated from a high school in the city of Royal Oak, Michigan. Students must attend a college, vocational or trade school in the State of Michigan. Funds for the scholarships come from Lions Club fundraisers, as well as individuals who contribute to our club for this purpose. Pecky was born January 19, 1929 to Pecky D. Lewis, Sr. and Bertha (Haack) Lewis in Hazel Park, Michigan. He was a 1947 graduate of Hazel Park High School.

 

Pecky is survived by his wife of 74 years, Vivian (Fathers) Lewis, his children Susan (Gary) Halliday, Janet Lewis, Robin Lewis, Heidi Lewis, and David Lewis, grandson Peter Halliday (Stefanie), and great-grandchildren Craig and Anneke Halliday. He is also survived by his remaining sibling, sister Karen (Don) Kakoczki, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

 

Pecky committed much of his time to public service. He was a member of the Royal Oak Planning Commission and Mayor of the city of Royal Oak from 1975 to 1981. He was a member of the Oakland County Parks Commission from 1981 to 2014 serving as chairman for 18 years. He was named to the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Hall of Fame in 2015.

Pecky was a longtime member and leader of the Royal Oak Lions Club. He joined the club on June 1, 1961. He was elected president of the club in 1969 serving one term as president. Later, in 1974 he was named a District Cabinet Secretary, serving one term in that role.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 16, 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Road (4 blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak (248-541-7000). The funeral will take place there on Monday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m.
