History of Quirino Mamparang Lions Club

The Quirino Mamparang Lions Club (QMLC) was initially organized by Lion Maryrose Pascua-Barnhurst of Sacramento Embarcadero Lions Club, District 4-C5, California, USA.  Although Lion Maryrose was born and raised in the municipality of Diffun, Quirino Province, Philippines, she has a long history with the Lions Club organization.  Her late father, Mayor Silverio L. Pascua was a Lion and one of the pioneers of the Diffun Lions club in the 1960s and 70s.  The early Diffun Lions Club, though strong at the time, began to age along with its members and eventually the membership dwindled and closed.  Maryrose’s dream was to bring back the Lions to her home town and through Lions, continue “TO SERVE” her fellow Quirinians.

On March 27, 2012, this dream began when Lion Maryrose Barnhurst returned to her home in Quirino Province.  Seeing a need for the benefits of Lionism in Quirino, she determined to either revive the Diffun Lions Club, or organize a new club.  She gathered her friends, relatives, and teachers and batch mates from her Saint Mary’s Academy (SMA) 1982 graduating class.

With the help of her high school classmate, Dr. Alex Cristobal, the dream took root.  And at the Cristobal farmhouse in Santiago City, fledgling Lion recruits were introduced to and taught about the club’s mission, vision, and what it means to be a Lion.  Dr. Cristobal’s assistance became even more critical as Maryrose ended her vacation and returned to California.  Over the next two years she returned four times, and the ideals so carefully nurtured began to gain strength and a momentum of its own until in March 2014 the Quirino Mamparang Lions Club was official organized in the mountain province of Quirino.

The club name is derived from its central location within the Quirino Province, and as Dr. Samuel O. Benigno, President of the Quirino State University, pointed out it is surrounded by the Mamparang Mountains.

Finally, on March 12, 2014, at the end of a visit, Lion Maryrose hand carried the new charter and membership applications back to California and submitted the new charter club application to the Lions Club International (LCI).

On March 31, 2014, LCI approved the charter for the Quirino Mamparang Lions Club (QMLC).  On August 21 2014 the QMLC was officially chartered within the District 301-C Northern Luzon, Philippines.  At the time of charter Atty. Edith Rivera-Datuin, the District Governor LY 2013-14, District 301-C, recognized the new club, Roger S. Dy, the current District Governor of District 301-C, installed the officers, and Alexander Ang, the 1st Vice District Governor inducted the 24 members of the new club.
