Lions Power Packs
The Plaistow Lions Club is proud to announce their latest project to help the Plaistow Community. In partnership with the Pollard Elementary School the "Lion's Power Packs" program looks to get off the ground in October 2014. The Power Pack program will put food in the hands of elementary school children on Friday to carry them through the weekend when otherwise they would get limited to no nourishment throughout the weekend. This will continue every Friday throughout the school year for these children. The Plaistow Lions will be working with the local elementary school, grocery stores to get this program moving and help kids in need. Working with the school we are hoping to start helping 12-15 children as a pilot for this program. Unfortunately this is just the tip of the problem throughout the district. There are many organizations who already recognize this issue including an End 68 Hours of Hunger group in the Sanborn district. Check out this link to get a better understanding of why this is such a growing need and worthwhile project.
The goal is to keep both the children and families anonymous but still providing a bag of food for the child to carry home that will get them two breakfasts, two lunches and three dinners for one child, with some left over for snacks. Each bag of food costs approximately $10 per week per child. The program will be funded by fundraising we do throughout the year, but we also welcome food donations and individual child sponsorships.
If you are interested in sponsoring a child for a week a $10 donation will help achieve this. There are 38 weeks in a school year, so if you wanted to sponsor a child for the year it is $380. As stated earlier we are hoping to start providing the bags as early as October so look for us in various fundraising events or food drives that will be announced.
