Welcome to the Plainfield Lions Club
This holiday season in our community there were nearly 900 people touched by the incredible service of the Plainfield Lions Club. Our area Lions Club has aided our fellow citizens in Plainfield and adjacent towns to obtain glasses, hearing aids, and other areas of need and support for the last 72 years. Over the past fifteen years, your Plainfield Lions Club has donated $180,000 to District 202 families in need with our holiday gift basket program, and in the last ten years our Plainfield club has donated $70,000 to community sight and hearing cases.
Our Plainfield Lions Club is a selfless organization that works together for the common good. With the minutia and politics of what we all do for a living, it's uplifting to have in our area a professional organization that is so no-nonsense about celebrating service. We have a simple focus on what is best for our community, our kids, and our disadvantaged. Big projects are done effortlessly because the wide majority of our club is willing and enthusiastic to help. We have fast and efficient meetings, and most of all we have a lot of fun doing great things for sight, hearing, and our families in need in the community of Plainfield.
The Plainfield Lions have an array of fundraisers, activities, and traditions that include an annual golf outing, a dinner auction, meat raffles, a spaghetti dinner for the elderly, and a holiday gift drive. Last year we also celebrated the historic 70th annual lighting and presentation of the Plainfield Lions Club Crèche at the Plainfield Plymouth Church.
LIONS International was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1917 by insurance agent Melvin Jones. Lions Club International has ever since offered business and professional people a way of sharing their success by helping those less fortunate. A highlight of the Lions’ early history was a speech at the 1925 convention, when the legendary Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." We responded, and the Lions are now best known for their sight-related programs, including SightFirst, the world's largest blindness prevention program. The Lions Club is now the largest service organization, with 1.4 million members serving in more than 180 countries. Our local den of Lions Clubs International in Plainfield was established in 1949.
