SOUP KITCHEN
Every week club members cook nutritious vegetable soup which is dropped off at a nearby community to feed the people in need.
FOOD COLLECTION & BOOK SALES
Generally, on the last Saturday morning of each month, Lions of Northcliff gather at Pick 'n Pay Supermarket in the Heathway Shopping Centre, Beyers Naude Drive. We encourage the 'shopping' public to donate an item or 2 of non-perishable, nutricious food which we distribute to the needy folk in our community. A trolley-load or 2 is the norm.
At the same time and venue, members man our extremely popular, good-quality 2nd hand books sale. Irrespective of the book's age, quality, size or author-popularity, all books are sold at a mere R10 each. The funds are used to support our community projects. So, if you have spare books to donate please contact our book sales coordinator - info on the 'Contacts' page.
CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR THE POOR
Each December, we provide about 50 hampers of foods, snacks and a famous Lions christmas cake to much-appreciative in the Newlands area of Johannesburg. This is at a special Christmas party organised by a local church. It is greatly rewarding seeing beeming, happy faces that would most likely not be in a position to to enjoy their own bit of Christmas cheer.
THE FAMOUS LIONS CHRISTMAS CAKES
When it comes to the most sought-after Christmas cakes every year-end, those produced by the Lions organisation [for many a year now], proverbially 'take the cake'. 1 kg of fruit-filled, soft and economical they are essential buys by our regular 'shoppers' - at events like Richard Cock's Christmas Carols concerts held at the Wits University's Linder Auditorium in early December, corporate companies [for staff and clients] and the general public.
Keep an eye on our facebook page [October / November] for details of this year's availability and pricing.
702/DISCOVERY WALK THE TALK
Each winter [July], our members [plus a few faithful friends and volunteers] stretch their muscles and join 50,000 walkers in the 5km walk pushing wheelchairs for disabled people residdent at Forest Farm Centre and Ann Harding Cheshire Home.
After the 'energy-sapping marathon of perspiration exhilation, we recover over burgers and beers. It is truly one of Northcliff club's fun events. And we thrive on fun.
BUDDY DAY
Usually in April, a number of Lions clubs gather to entertain, feed and uplift approx 150 folk with a wide variety of disabilities for a fun morning in the Roodepoort area. In addition to the Lions members, we invite members of the public to assist and accompany them - as their Buddy. It is indeed an inspiring, educating and fulfilling morning. You are welcome to come and join us.
OPERATION BRIGHTSIGHT - SPECTACLE FRAMES COLLECTION
We act as a collection point for used spectacles [from optometrists and the public], which are passed on to the regional Lions office. They assist real needy [mainly poor], folk with eyesight problems with testing and the provision of new frames and lenses.
