WE CHANGE LIVES
The Newport Lions Club has been serving the needs of our community since 1923. At present, we are made up of 25 dedicated men and women. We are part of the world's largest service community, Lions Clubs International, with 1.35 million members in 207 countries.
The Newport Lions take an active role in serving our community, as well as providing financial assistance to local, state and national organizations.
Our main mission is sight related. Beginning in 1995, the Newport Lions began vision screening in several Newport schools. Today this community service has grown to include in all but four Aquidneck Island schools, screening over 3,000 students. Other ongoing sight related projects include eyeglass recycling and providing eyeglasses for those in need.
All funds collected by the Newport Lions Charitable Foundation (501(c)3) through various fundraising projects and generous donations are donated to organizations including: the FIDELCO Guide Dog Foundation, RI Lions Children’s Cancer Fund, RI Lions Camp Mauchatea, Support Our Troops and other organizations serving people who are disabled and those in need of assistance.
We also support these local organizations – The Ronald McDonald House, RI US Naval Sea Cadets, The Seamen’s Church Institute, and the Viking Riders Toy Drive and the Newport Housing Hotline.
Since 1947, we have awarded a four-year/$1,000 per year scholarship to a Newport high school senior.
The Newport Lions sponsored the RI All-American Soap Box Derby for 15 years, teaching children between the ages of 9 and 14 the joys of hard work and friendly competition. We introduced The Super Kids’ races to allow children challenged with disabilities to participate in the races.
We have accomplished much, but we must continue to work to make a difference in the lives of people in our community and around the world.
Wouldn’t you like to make a difference?
