Lions Work to Improve Sight and Prevent Blindness

Lions Clubs International have gained worldwide recognition for our work to improve sight and prevent blindness. Members from New Glarus and around the world are actively involved in:

  • Transporting tissue for Wisconsin Lions Eye Bank  which provides eye tissue for sight-saving surgeries;
  • Screening the vision of hundreds of thousands of people every year;
  • Preventing blindness by providing treatment to those at risk of losing their vision;
  • Providing emergency relief around the world; and
  • Recycling eyeglasses and hearing aids.
  • (Collection sites: glasses and hearing aids - Sugar River Banks Belleville, New Glarus, Post Offices Belleville, New Glarus, New Glarus Library).

We work with Prevent Blindness Wisconsin, a non-profit organization that provides free, direct sight-saving services. They train and certify Lions members for vision screening.

New Glarus Lions will be conducting vision screening for children at the following locations:

  • New Glarus Child Development Days at New Glarus Elementary School - Dates 2024-25 (To be determined)
  • Small World Childcare Center in New Glarus - Dates  2024-25 (To be determined)
  • Growing Tree Academy in New Glarus -  Dates 2023-24 (To be determined)
  • Child Development Days at Bellville Elementery School - Dates 2024-25 (To be determined)
  • Once Upon a Time - Belleville - Dates 2024-25 (To be determined)

Trained Lions members will be using the PlusOptix Vision Screener. The five-second, automatic test makes patient compliance easier. Lights and sounds engage a child’s attention. Minimal cooperation is necessary, making it equally effective for young who are non-verbal or shy. Screens for common vision problems.
