June 2019


 

  • Distribution of Reading Glasses: Lion President Jim Luce, P Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis went to the Roosevelt Island Senior Center, and summer Interns from the James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation also attended. 1,000 pairs of reading glasses were donated to the senior care organization that supports senior centers on Roosevelt Island and in other locations throughout NYC.
  • Picked up Eye Glasses: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne, went to Yonkers and picked up 1,600 pairs of reading glasses. Thanks to the efforts of Lion Howard Berman from the Yonkers Lions Club. Many District 20-2 Clubs participated on this great day to help disadvantaged people get reading glasses.
  • District 20-R2 Officers Training: PDG Peter Pergolis lead the Treasurer Officer Training. Very good training sessions for all Officers. Lion Joanne Pergolis attended Secretary Officer Training.
  •  NY Global Leaders Lions Club Meeting: The New York Global Leaders Lions Club held its last meeting for 2018-2019 at its new meeting location, 570 Lexington Ave. 12 Floor, We are now having meetings that you can attend in person or use ZOOM video conferencing and/or audio call-in. We believe more members will attend meetings and will help us attract new members.

  • Gala for the Bhutanese Community’s: PDG Peter Pergolis, Lion Joanne Pergolis, our Associate Member Lion Jamyang Chhoden a member of the Druk Bhutan LC and our newly installed Club member Lion Dhendup “Pemo” Rinchen attended this wonderful event to raise money and awareness of the Bhutanese Community in NYC. Other Lions in attendance were PDG Loretta Wu and Lion Jimmy Chu. PDG Peter spoke to the UN representative from Bhutan with the hope of aiding the children of Bhutan through the joint efforts of Clubs in District 20-R2 and the Druk Bhutan Lions Club. We also spoke to some individuals at this event about joining our Club.

May 2019


  • Lions Webinar: PDG Peter listen to a webinar on how to attract "Young Members". Featured speaker was a DG from the USA that is 24 years old.  Seminar inspired PDG Peter to try and recruit young Lions and Leos for the NY Global Leaders Lions Club.
  • NYS Mentoring Program: PDG Peter Pergolis  and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended our weekly Mentoring Program at PS 188. Today we attended a fashion show, in which some of our Mentees were on stage. They were happy that we attended this event.
  • Meeting with Lions from Germany: PDG Peter and RC Lion Joanne along with Lions Terry and Sid Baumgaren, NY Financial District LC meet with Lions from Germany.  Lion Helge Ellwart. President of the Bremen Lions Club and his wife Svenja (soon to be a Lion).  We shared Bruch and stories of our different service projects,  We also exchanged gifts and increased good will between District 20-R2 and Lions from Bremen. Germany.
  • Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence (LPCCI): PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne, Chairperson LPCCI for District 20-R2 at the NYS MD 20 Convention had a two day Exhibit Booth for LPCCI  Funds were raised and awareness raised for the need for Service Dogs for disabled men, women and children.
  • 31st Annual LCIF Convocation: PDG Peter Pergolis, Lion Joanne Pergolis, Lion President Jim Luce and Lion Tamer Bix Luce attended this wonderful event.  Lion President Jim Luce received his Melvin Jones Fellowship recognition. Two full page Ads were placed in the Event Journal.
  • Our 4th Charter Night Celebration: Our had a great event, at Congee Village in New York in-spite  of heavy rain fall during our event. Key speaker PID Ed Lecius accompanied my his wife Elaine from Nashua, New Hampshire gave a wonderful update on LCI membership growth. PID Ed gave our initial Charter Night Event. PID Ed installed four new members. DG Gustavo installed our new  Officers for 2019-2020, with the assistance on PDGs in attendance.We had 46 in attendance, mostly Lions. Lion President Jim Luce and Club Secretary Chloe Hoang received Presidential Certificates of Excellence. Lion Joanne Pergolis received her 10 Year Lions Pin from DG Gustavo Sanchez.

 

April 2019


  • Beeping Egg Hunt at The Lavalle School for the Blind: PDG Peter and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended this wonderful event. Our Associate Member Lion Bob White, my 2nd Cousin, a member of the Mercer Telephone Lions Club, also attended and his Club donated $150. Event organized by the Yonkers Millennium Lions Club. Lion Holly Booker from the SI North Star LC was also in attendance. Our District Governor Gustavo Sanchez, FVDG Medadie Sy, SVDG Riki Ito and PDGs Amado Sy and Guillermo Perez were also in attendance. A great day for District 20-R2 and the children we Served. The children received goody bags from the Yonkers Millennium LC.
  • Beeping Egg Hunt Staten Island North Star Lions Club: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne took part in this wonderful event. Children that are sight impaired can take part in an egg hunt because the plastic eggs have a beeping device. Devises provided by the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Agency. Event organizer was Lion Holly Banner and the SI North Star LC lead by PDG Aurora.
  • Roosevelt Island Cherry Blossom Festival: The 9th annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Roosevelt Island celebrating Japanese culture in New York City. We have 4 Lions and 5 Leo volunteered to support the event.
  • NY State Mentoring Program: PDG Peter and Lion Joanne mentored 2 students at PS 118 in NYC. We work along side Lions from the N.Y. Financial District. Mentoring session went well.
  • New York State Mentoring Program: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis, mentored two students at PS 188. This is a recurring district project lead by the N.Y. Financial District Lions Club. Mentoring session went well.

March 2019


  • NYS Mentoring Program: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended this Mentoring Administration Session with Lions from the NY Financial District LC and Leaders from PS118 to discuss the Program.  We received a Letter of Commendation from the School Principal for our Mentoring Efforts.  Program will continue at 4pm on Thursday afternoons in accordance with the School calendar.
  • NY Japanese American Lions Club 41st Charter Night Celebration: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis could not attend with wonderful annual event,  Sent regrets and made a donation to the NY Japan American LC Disaster Relief Fund.
  • LDUN: PDG Peter and Lion Joanne attended the 41 Annual Lions Day at the United Nations.  Multiple Presentations were made on efforts to curb the worldwide Diabetes epidemic. We hope to have a Districtwide Diabetes Awareness Program.
  • Evening of Friendship & Understanding: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended a post LDUN at the Papillon Restaurant hosted by the N.Y. Financial District LC. Great event, from all the USA and Europe attended this wonderful event. Our International President was in attendance and addressed the gathering.
  • LCI Interview: PDG and Lion RC Portia Fagel we’re interviewed and Videotaped to discuss our involvement with the Lions worldwide effort to help baby Jaden. Jaden has a rare form of Brian cancer and we attempted to get him treatment at MSKCC in NYC. This was an example of Lions worldwide working to help people in need. Our International President was separately interviewed that day.

Feburary 2019


  • Guiding Lions Training/Recertifcation: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended this great Training Event to be Recertified as Guiding Lions.  Event held at the Middle School at West 164th St, Planner of event was PDG Guillermo Perez. Trainer was PDG Lori Reiger, assisted by PDG Fred Reiger, they did an excellent job. Approximately 25 Lions attended and took the Guiding Lions Test.
  •  Visiting Veterans at the Bronx Veterans Medical Center: PDG Peter and Lion Joanne attended our District's Annual Event for Veterans.  About 7 Clubs from our District participated in this Event.  Clothing, books and puzzles were donated for the Veterans use.  Event coordinated by our District Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Osvaldo Castro of the Borinquen LC.
  • Global Leaders 19th Gala: PDG Peter Pergolis, Lion Joanne Pergolis, Club President Jim Luce, Club Secretary Chloe Hoang. Global Leaders LEO President Tenzin along with an additional 5 members of our Lions Club attended this Gala Fund Raiser.  PDG Peter presented LEO President Tenzin with an award for outstanding Service to the Foundation and LC.  A video was shown of the NY Global Leaders LC and LEOs meeting with Lions in Indonesia. Video was edited by LEO Tenzin.
  • Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independece (LPCCI): PDG Peter and Lion Joanne, District Chairperson for LPCCI made a presentation at the Hampton Bay Lions Club.  This Club is a generous supporter of LPCCI and CCI.  Club made a donation to LPCCI on the amount of $4,250.Presentaion focused on Service Dogs for Veterans and Children.

January 2019


  • 1st Global Action Team (GAT) Sympooium: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended GAT Symposium along with many Lions from District 20-R2 and instructors from MD 20.  PDG Peter spoke on behalf of the District in his role as Global Service Coordinator.  PDG Peter stressed the importance of each Club having a Global Service Chairperson and recording Service Activities in MYLCI. The 5 areas of Service Projects were reviewed and PDG Peter offered his assistance to Clubs with their Service Projects.
  • NYS Mentoring Program: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended the Mentoring Program at PS188.  Helping children living in homeless shelters improve sense of self and understanding that people care,  Joined by other Mentors from the NY Financial District LC. After school program, attendance by Mentees is voluntary.

  • LPCCI and CCI Fund Raiser: PDG Peter Pergolis District Service Coordinator and Lion Joanne Pergolis, Club Service Chairperson and District 20-R2 LPCCI Chairperson attended the Holiday Party of the Flushing Central LC. Event held at Mingle Restaurant in Flushing, NY. This Club is in K-1 and we meet them at the MD-20 Convention where we had an Exhibit Booth for LPCCI. Great evening, funds raised and awareness raised for the need for Service Dog.
  • Santa Claus With Preschool Kids: President Jim Luce, Sectretary Chloe Hoang, and Lion Joanne Pergolis, Club Service Chairperson we’re in attendance. Our Club donated $150. Event was very well attended by Lions from other Clubs in our District. Presents were distributed to ver 250 kids. Wonderful, Happy Event.
  • MD-20 LEOs Ceremony and Officers Training: President Jim Luce, PDG Peter and Lion Joanne Pergolis attended this Event. Many LEOs from MD 20 Districts were in attendance. Event held in the afternoon at the Larkin Plaza Public Library. Event planner Lion Pablo Romano. CC Sharon Battaglia, Event Moderator. Our District Governor and our District LEO Leadership also we’re on attendance Lion Paul Seto and Lion Maria Sanchez.

  • Journey to Service-LCI Webinar: PDG Peter Pergolis attended a webinar to improve skills as a District Service Coordinator.  Good webinar focusing on the online tools available to us.
  • District 20-R2 Convention: PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis represented our Club at our District Convention. Diabetes Awareness was a very good topic, An excellent time was had by all,key note speaker was PID Ed Lecius. Excellent turn out coordinated by our District Governor Gustavo Sanchez.

October 2018


  • Vision Screening: PDG Peter Pergolis, Lion Joanne Pergolis and Dr. Bryan Wolynski attended the Pro Youth Recreation and Family Center, Inc, on Staten Island. Event was coordinated with the Staten Island North Star Lions Club and the Yonkers Millennium Lions Club.  37 children were screened and 22 referred,  Lion Holly Bonner of the SI North Star Club did a great job in facilitating this event.  Dr Bryan worked very hard to give each child referred a very professional eye exam.
  • NYS Mentoring Program (25th): Time moved to 4pm from 3pm to give kids time to unwind from a full day of classes. Time change seems to work,  PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne Pergolis in attendance for our Club.  Lion Terry and 3 members of the NY Financial District Lions Club were also in attendance.
  • NYS Mentoring Program (18th): PDG Peter Pergolis and Lion Joanne mentored children at PS 188 in Manhattan, These children spend10 hours a day at this school and live in homeless shelters. 5 Lions from the NY Financial District Lions Club lead by Lion Terry Paladini-Baumgarten were also in attendance.

  • 5K Run/Walk for Children with Brain Cancer: PDG Peter Pergolis, Lions Joanne Pergolis and Mark Roshkind, took part in this program sponsored by Head for the Cure,  Funds raised were donated to the Children's Brian Cancer Research Program at Weill Cornell Medicine, We raised approximately $100 for this event.

 


September 2018


  • 2nd ADA Chinatown Weekend Walks: Lion President Jim Luce. Bix Luce. Matthew Luce and Chloe Hoang of the Club met with Captain James Van Thach and his Service Dog Liz to promote awareness for assistance dogs for Veterans in need of help due military conflict injuries and PTSD. Table set up with information on Service Dog programs through Canine Companions for Independence.

August 2018


  • GAT Webinar: PDG Peter H. Pergolis attended a webinar with other members of the GAT. Event hosted by LCI. Important training session.
  • Visited NYC SUNY Optometry Campus Lions Club: PDG Peter H. Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) visited this Club to meet the new Officers and Club members. I am the Region Chairperson that includes this Club in Zone 8.  It was a good meeting.  Future meetings will be conducted by the Zone Chair.  PDG Peter worked closely with this Club when he was District Governor.
  • Volunteer Service at Harlem Day Festival: PDG Peter H, Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) worked at a booth to promote the NYS Mentoring Program. Event was organized by the NY Financial District Lions Club. Many people visited our booth and signed the book for additional information to be Mentors.
  • New Rochelle (Baychester) Huguenot Summer Fund Raiser: PDG Peter H, Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) attended this event at The Warburg Center in Mount Vernon. Event was also attended by other Lions Clubs in our District. A good time was had by all.
  • Canine Companions for Independence Summer Graduation-Service Dog Teams: PDG Peter H. Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) attended the graduation of Service Dog Teams in Medford, Long Island.  I am the District 20-R2 Chairperson for the Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence.  It is always a heart felt event.  We met with some of the Service Dog Teams and the Leadership Team on CCI. Congratulations to All!
  • Lions Club in Indonesia: August 10, 2018 We were so delighted to meet with PDG Jono Koesmo of the Jakarta Nusantara Lions Club at Lions Club Headquarter in North Jakarta, Indonesia and together visit Old Folks Home, a senior center there.
  • 1st Voting Cabinet Meeting District 20-R2: PDG Peter H. Pergolis, District Global Service Coordinator and I {Lion Joanne Region 4 Chair ) attended this important meeting and all District Officers were sworn in by our DG Gustavo Sanchez and assisted by the PDGs in attendance.
  • NY Phil Am Lions Club: PDG Peter H. Pergolis attended the Summer Soiree at the Eastern Civic Center in Old Greenwich, CT,  Event was attended by Lions from NY, NJ CT and MA. A huge fundraiser for Philippines disaster relief.  Event well attended by our District.
  • NY Cosmopolitan Lions Club Installtion of Officers: PDG Peter H. Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) attended this wonderful gathering of Lions, Event was very well attended by our District.
  • NY Barahona Lions Club Installion of Officers: PDG Peter H. Pergolis and I (Lion Joanne) attended this event in Yonkers, NY.  Well attended by our District.

July 2018


  • Fund Raiser for Jayden: The new officers of the Yonkers Millennium Lions Club for 2018-2019 were installed on July 29th by PDG Peter H. Pergolis. The Installation was a fundraiser for Jayden, a 26 month old child with neuroblastoma. PDG Peter and I (Lion Joanne Pergolis) donated $100,00.
  • Fundraising Event / CampaignNY Japan Ameerican Lion Club Flood Disaster Relief Fundraiser: PDG Peter and I were unable to attend due to a Lions schedule conflict, donated $40.00.
  • ADA Chinatown Weekend Walks: PDG Peter H. Pergolis had a booth for Service Dogs for Veterans in conjunction with the Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence. Captain James Van Thach  and his Service Dog Liz participated in this event.  Our Lions Club President Jim Luce was in attendance. Captain James and PDG Peter spoke on the value of Service Dogs to Veterans and others in need of a Service Dog.
  • Summer International Potluck: A church potluck that includes official announcement of our newly chartered New York Global Leaders Leo Clubs with 12 members who are young global leaders age 18-30. Leo Club Extension Awards were presented to Lions Club officers and Leo advisors Joanne Pergolis and Chloe Hoang. Vice President Peter Pergolis also announced meeting with Lions Club partner in Jakarta, Indonesia during our Leadership Experience in August. PDG Loretta Wu, Lion Salome James, and potential lions members also attended the event.
  • Receive Leo Sponsorship Badge and Supplies: Our New York Global Leaders Leo Club is chartered. Lions Club officers met with Leo Club President Tenzin Tseyang to discuss financials, upcoming meetings, as well as membership certificates and Leo pins for new members of our Leo Club.
  • Meeting at UN Mission of Bhutan: Vice President Peter Pergolis, Secretary Chloe Hoang, and three new Lions Kritagyata Nicholls, Dr. Raj Capoor, and Dr. Jaishree Capoor had a wonderful meeting with the Ambassador of Bhutan Hon. Doma Tshering and the Deputy Permanent Representative Hon. Karma S. Tshosar to discuss assisting Project Ability Bhutan Society in transporting medical equipment for children with disabilities.
  • Visit to Hamilton Lions Club of Bermuda: While on vacation PDG Peter Pergolis and RC Lion Joanne had dinner with the Hamilton Lions Club of Bermuda.  PDG Steve Dean was our escort.  Five other lions, three from MD-20 and two from the Mid West were also at this meeting, we were all traveling on the Norwegian Cruise Line-Escape.  Great meeting and we really enjoyed the hospitality and Lions camaraderie.
  • NY Global Leaders Lions Leo Club Chartered by LCI: Omega Leo Club formed with 12 Members and RC Lion Joanne Pergolis serving as Leo Club Adviser.

June 2018


  • NYS Mentoring Program: IPDG Peter attended Mentoring with his Partner in Service Lion Joanne at PS 188 in NYC.  The Mentoring Program for 9 year old students will recess for the summer.  Program will start again in the fall.  We hope more Lions will join this Program with us. Serving disadvantaged youth is important and rewarding for both the Mentees and the. 
  • NYS Mentoring Program: IPDG Peter attended our District Mentoring Program with his Partner in Service Lion Joanne.  Program set up for 9 year (third grade students) at PS188.  We provide friendship and serve as role models.  We ended the session singing The Lions Song. 
  • Dedication of the Lions Den Library at the James J, Peters Veterans Medical Center: IPDG Peter attended this event with his Partner in service Lion Joanne.  This was IPDG Peter's District Governor, 2016-2017, Centennial Project.  Project funded from the DGs District Governor's account, $2965. Great event held on Flag Day to honor our Veterans.  Plaque was unveiled commemorating this event,  The Lions Den Library, is a quiet reading area for our Veterans enjoyment.  See NY Ann Sullivan-White Plains for more information about this great day for Lions and our Veterans.
  • Donations to LCIFFund Raiser: We could not attend the Walk in the Park but IPDG Peter and Lion Joanne each donated $100,00 to LCIF.
  • NY Ann Sullivan-White Plains LC: IPDG Peter attended his Partner in Service Lion Joanne's final meeting of year as this Lions Club Guiding Lion. Helped Club plan future events and helped add a new member.
  • 4th District Meeting: IPDG Peter attended this District Meeting with his Partner in Service Lion Joanne,  Meeting held at the Oriental Palace on Staten Island.  IPDG Peter said, it's always good to visit with Lions on Staten Island.
  • NY Japanese American Lions Club 41st Charter Night: IPDG Peter attended with his Partner in Service Lion Joanne at the Yale Club in NYC.  Great event with excellent entertainment.

  • DG Norma Mendez-Cruz Testamonial Dinner and Awards Awards Ceremony: PDG Peter Pergolis attended with his Partner in Service Lion Joanne, at Maestro's Catering Hall.  Very good event and nice send-off for DG Norma.
  • Meet Prospective Leos: Meeting held in Lion Mike Aida's Office with members of NY Global Leaders LC. IPDG Peter was the host speaker, Lion Porta from Yonkers Millennium Lions Club spoke about Medical Missions, We spoke to potential Leos and a Leo Club with be formed,  sponsored by the NY Global Leaders Lions Club. IPDG and Lion Joanne will donate $200.00 for seed money to start the Leo Club.  Lion Joanne will be the Leo Club Advisor.  This is a Community based Omega Leo Club-ages 18-30.

  • Roosevelt Island Cherry Blossom Festival: Last weekend, Saturday, April 21, 2018, more than ten thousand entered the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park for cultural festival on perfect day overlooking Manhattan. For the sixth year, the Roosevelt Island community – spearheaded by the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) with enormous support from the Roosevelt Island Operation Corp. (RIOC) and the F.D.R. Four Freedoms State Park – held its Spring Cherry Blossom Festival (“Omatsuri”).
  • Legal Status for Youth: Keynote speaker Prof. Lenni Benson is a nationally recognized expert in the field of immigration and political asylum. She’s a professor of law and the founder of Safe Passage Project, created to address the unmet legal needs of indigent immigrant youth.

 


December 2017


  • Christmas Miracle for Kids: Our New York Global Leaders Lions Club co-hosted fourth Community Christmas bash for over 600 kids in The Public School of Global Leaders in the Lower East Side (China Town). The event started with a brief introduction by a representative of the New York Cosmopolitan Lions club and was followed by a huge performance by Santa- who performed at the Macy’s Parade. The program was full of laughter and special antics and Santa made sure it was interactive to keep the kids involved and occupied. Later on, gifts were given out to the kids and Santa took photos with the kids and their teachers.
