Project Overview

Community-Based Diabetes Control in Nakivale Refugee Settlement

The Lions Club of Nakivale Light aims to tackle the growing problem of diabetes among refugees in Nakivale, where there are no specialized healthcare services for diabetic patients. Nakivale has only one health center serving over 172 thousands of refugees, which is overwhelmed by the large number of refugees, and many diabetics suffer or die because they lack access to medicine and emergency care. The situation is worsened by malnutrition, which is increasing the number of diabetes cases every day.

This project seeks to improve the lives of 5,000 diabetic refugees in Nakivale from 2024 to 2025. The main goals are to raise awareness about diabetes, provide early detection, offer education on managing diabetes, and create a support network for those living with the condition.

Our major Objectives are

  • To Raise Awareness about diabetes, its causes, and prevention methods.
  • To Screen for Diabetes to identify individuals at risk or those who are already diabetic.
  • To Provide Education to help individuals manage their condition through diet, exercise, and proper medication.
  • To Create a Support Network where diabetic individuals can share experiences and support each other.

Our Key Activities:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Use posters, flyers, and community events to educate refugees about diabetes prevention and healthy living.
  • Screening Programs: Organize mobile and community-based screenings to identify people at risk of diabetes and provide follow-up care.
  • Educational Workshops: Hold regular sessions to teach people how to manage diabetes, including healthy eating, glucose monitoring, and medication adherence.
  • Peer Support Groups: Set up support groups where diabetic refugees can talk, share advice, and help each other emotionally.
