Millersburg Lions fund-raising for Christmas display
The Millersburg Lions Club recently kicked off its annual fundraising drive to help fund the Millersburg Christmas holiday lighting display.
For decades, donations through the Millersburg Lions Club have covered the majority of the expenses for the Christmas display, including but not limited to electricity, light bulbs, wires, poles, trees and pine roping. Traditionally, the Lions have relied on self-addressed envelopes to collect donations to cover the expenses.
During the last 8 years, Millersburg Borough and the Millersburg Lions Club have been working to update the Christmas display. The support poles, wiring, and light sockets for the overhead lights (which included 9,164 feet of wire and 2,291 sockets) were replaced. The lights on the trees and in the garland have been converted to LED bulbs as an energy-saving measure. The bulbs used in the garland were chosen especially to preserve the traditional Millersburg appearance. With the LED conversion, the electric bill for the annual display has been reduced from a high of $2,035.25 in 2010 to last year’s cost of $283.99. However, the costs for the trees and garland have greatly increased from $1,291 in 1992 for the garland and 153 trees to $5,619 in 2022 for the garland and 75 smaller sized trees. Last year’s total expenses were about $10,000.
