Measles campaign
May I express my deep gratitude for the support that the Maun Lions club rendered to the DHMT in the recent measles campaign held on the 4-8th November 2013.
The Lions involvement was really very timely and strategic. The club arranged for Lunch at a renowned spot in Maun, at which the entire media houses of Maun were present. This gave a great opportunity for the DHMT's message on the measles campaign to be effectively captured and disseminated to the local population through extensive media coverage
I am confident that this media coverage was part of the reason that we got a very impressive immunization coverage of 97% percent.
In addition to the media coverage, your volunteering to open the clinic for after hours vaccination for those Mothers and care givers who would not make it during the day, was a great boost to our campaign. I would be most grateful to have a feedback on how many got vaccinated in your clinic.
Overall I must say the speeches which the lions delivered at that Lunch really did encourage the DHMT, as we felt that as a health delivery organ of the ministry of health we were not alone but have partners in the name of Maun Lions club who are able to stand with us to reach the intended population.

Maun-Greater Lions - Diabetes Awareness Day Celebrations 16 November 2013
The club initiated and coordinated Strides Activities – World Diabetes Awareness Day in partnership with the District Health Management Teams (DHMT) Ministry of Health in Maun on Saturday 16 November 2013. The activities began with a walk with the two above mentioned entities, Okavango International School Leos, members of the Council, First National Bank representatives and members of the Maun community. At the end of the walk donated fruits and water was distributed. There was a short programme during which there were songs from members of the Maun Community, a testimony by one of the diabetic patients, presentations by Maun-Greater Lions and DHMT. The Guest speaker for the day was the District Commissioner (representative). After the ceremony, there was screening for diabetes, checking of BMI, Blood Pressure, etc. There were one hundred and two persons screened for Diabetes and only one person was referred.
Golf shirts and bush hats for the event for Lions were donated by First National Bank, Maun Branch, while the Leos received a donation of tee shirts from the club’s two guiding Lions – Lion Brian Le Roux (Lobatse) and Lion Jithu Madu (Francistown). It was a successful day and members of the public who attended were very appreciative of the day's activities.
A twinning partnership between The Lions Club of Forde in Norway and Maun-Greater has seen some major benefits for Kareng Hostel. One member of the Lions Club of Forde visited Botswana during the Christmas vacation and it was agreed that their Club would send donations to assist the children of Kareng Hostel through the Lions Club of Maun-Greater.
Kareng Hostel which is 125 km from Maun and has capacity to cater for 200 children but it is currently overpopulated. On Saturday, the 16th of February 2012, Chairs, tables, a deep freezer, footballs and some plates were purchased for the hostel and Lions and Leos converged at The Fire Station Building in Maun to label the assets which will be delivered to Kareng Hostel at a date and time to be advised. These assets were acquired using money that was sent from Norway. More items are yet to be purchased for the hostel to exhaust the money. Orders have been made and we are waiting for these to be supplied.
Maun-Greater is in a partnership together with the Norway club and the North West District Council of Botswana. Earlier this year, Maun was also involved with this hostel in supplying books, grooming of the children and the RAP program. Some books will be handed over to the Hostel in due course in support of the International President's literacy theme centred around the Reading Action Program (RAP).The Council (which is in charge of the management of the hostel), continues to assist with transportation whenever members of Maun-Greater Lions Club have to go to the hostel for any activities.

Maun-Greater Lions Club members visited the Kareng Hostel, a facility that caters for under-privileged children 125km outside of Maun, Botswana on Saturday 26 January 2013. During the day, the Lions were engaged in touring the facility, reading to the children, listening to and telling stories as well as providing grooming services to some of the boys. Children also entertained the visitors with their renditions of traditional dances.

Community Outreach - Legothwana Primary School
When we thought of doing something for under-privileged children at the end of the year 2012, we decided that we would prefer to go outside of Maun to one of the surrounding villages; as we felt that such organizations in Maun were being given all the time by NGOs. It was fortunate that we decided to visit the community and find out some of the challenges the community is facing. After learning of the dire state of the students in terms of limitations of resources – stationery and reading books; we decided to mobilise our members to request for donations in order to provide something that will bring smiles on the faces of the children.
The Christmas party for the above-mentioned school children was held on the Friday 23 November 2012 at the school premises. It was graced with the presence of officers from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (North West District Regional Office) including the Acting Director, National Development Bank Manager - Ms Phiri, Officers from the North West District Council including the Senior Asst Council Secretary and the Public Relations Officers. 1st VP Lion Faith Mukoko, IPDG Lion Frances Palmer (Secretary), Treasurer – Lion Donna Mangra, Board members - Lion Rajarao Vegasana, Lion Rejoice Baikitse and Lion Onkagisitse Diane. All staff members and also parents and other members of the community were also present.
We are grateful to a number of organizations and/or individuals:
- National Development Bank
- Dainty Bakes
- Barclays Bank
- Trident
- Aquarite Water
- Wimpy
- Delta Stores
- Maun Printers
- Principal, Okavango International School
- North West District Council
- Dental Specialist – Letsolthabe Memorial Hospital
- Lions, Maun-Greater Lions Club (in particular Lions Faith, Rajarao and David).
Through them we were able to provide snacks, reading books, stationery, clothing etc. to pupils and also members of the community. Indeed being our first community outreach activity, we were really happy with its success.
There was also donation of clothing to the villagers at the Village Kgotla, this event was also a success.
