See what Lions do in communities around the country and world

This is a page showing what Loughborough Lions Club have been doing over the past 12 months or so.

Although we are hopefully at less risk from the Covid pandemic we still have to be concious of those at greater risk during any interaction with the general public. We have taken this into account with previous events but have still managed to provide support and assistance to many local comminuty groups and causes. We continue to consider this in club projects and events on our 'Club Calendar'.

Below is just a simple list of what we have been involved in:

  • Fashion Show & Shopping Event - the Fundraising Event was organsied at the Brush Bowls & Social Club in aid of Breast Cancer Now which raised in excess of £375 for the Charity.
  • Cake Stall on Loughborough Market - we ran a cake stall on loughborough Market raising funds for local charities.
  • Tea Party fundraiser for Ukrainian refugees - or club helped organise and run a tea party refugees escaping the conflict Ukraine.
  • Charnwood Talking News - our club was responsible for the formation of this service and now with the help of 6 other teams produce and distribute audio recordings of the Loughborough Echo and national newspapers to partially sighted and blind people in & around Loughborough.   • Marie Curie nurses - Collection at Morrions Superstore, Loughborough..
  • Loughborough Hospital Garden - We have for many years been planting and maintaining the garden at Loughborough Hospital, this is provided for patients, staff and visitors to provide a relaxing area for their own thoughts when visiting the Cafe.
  • Recycling used spectacles - Since its formation over 100 years ago Lions Clubs International has focused on sight related projects. We have placed spectacle collection boxes in various locations around Loughborough, once collected they are checked and refurbished, where necessary before being sent to 3rd world countries and given out for free.
  • Donation to Rushcliffe Ltd - Epinal Way (Care home).
  • Donation to Lions Clubs International Fund for humanitarian aid for Tonga Disaster relief.
  • Donation to Falcon Support Services E.M. Ltd  who provide help for the homeless and those in need across Leicestershire to help them find independence through housing and community support for over 20 years.
  • Donation to Alzheimer's Society.
  • Donation to Loughborough Branch Royal British Legion.
  • Donation to Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
  • Donation to Wenlo Riding for the Disabled who provide riding for the Disabled National Charity encouraging people with a disability to take up horse riding which is proven to make significant improvements to an individual’s physical and mental wellbeing.
  • We donate to and attend Ashby Statutes Fair with children from local schools with learning difficulties.
  • Donation to Crohns & Colitis Relief.
  • Donation to John Storer House Charnwood.
  • We have donated to the planting of a tree in Queen’s Park, Loughborough..
  • Some of our members help supervise at the Loughborough Covid Vaccination Centre  , Southfields Park..
  • We have donated to Sight Savers, providing treatment for preventative blindness treatment in 3rd world countries.
  • We have donated to Water Aid, supporting building water wells in developing countries.
  • We have collaborated with Loughborough Rotary Club in the completion of the building of an outside teaching space at Mountfields.Community Centre.
  • We continue to run and support Loughborough Blind Social Club. In addition, our club helped organise & enable a fish and chip supper get together and also a day trip to  Ulverscroft Manor for the Loughborough Blind Social Club.
  • We erected a Christmas Tree at All Saints Church, Loughborough at their Community Tree Festival.
  • One of our members ran a Diabetic Risk Assessment stall at a large 'Food for Free' event in Colchester.with food provided made from (gleaned) unwanted vegetables, left by food producers. Did you know that having uncontrolled diabetes can raise the risk of death by 50%? Diabetes UK have estimated that over 1 million people in the UK may have undiagnosed diabetes. Left uncoltrolled type 2 diabetes can raise the risk of heart attacks, blindness & amputations  So, please, when the oppurtunity arises have a 'Risk Assessment' undertaken which will assess your risk to getting type 2 diabetes. Know your risk (KNR) of getting diabetes.  The Risk Assessment is easy and you can go away knowing your risk of becoming a diabetic and what you can do to help prevent it. Don't know what we're talking about? Contact our Diabetes Officer, Colin Morgan on 0788 7486021. And yes, he is type 1 diabetic himself!
  • During the summer 2021 some of our members have been fruit gleaning collecting a large amount of surplus fruit & redistributing it to food banks, family help programmes.and kitchens/food providers in the town.
  • We assisted Shepshed Lions Club at their Carnival event in September 2021..
  • We provide  FREE Message in a bottle and wallets to individuals and resident groups.
  • Donation to Lions Clubs International Fund Disaster Fund for the floods in Germany..
  • Our club provided the Defibrillator in Loughborough Market square and continue to fund its maintenance.
  • We have undertaken litter picks in Loughborough during the pandemic.
  • We continue to help maintain the garden at Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough..
  • Donation to the Marie Curie nurses.
  • We made a large donation to John Storer House to help the work the charity is undertaking with feeding the needy during the Coronavirus crisis.
  • We also provide health based events for the general public - one such event was for Diabetes Risk Assessment.   • Loughborough Lions Club has its own purpose built Santa sleigh and provides his sleigh at Christmas time for the enjoyment of local children and raising money for worthy causes.
  • The Message in a Bottle initiative has been operated in the area by Loughborough Lions Club for many years. The purpose of the scheme is to place a plastic bottle in the fridges of the infirm and the elderly, particularly those living alone so that emergency services can easily find contact details plus information about medication and requirements of the indiividual. We also distribute Message in a Wallet which can be carried by individuals in case of accident or emergency away from home. The scheme is recognised by all the emergency services.
