"We Serve"
This is what we do for our community.
Hunger
Each month our club collects a substantial amount of donated goods and groceries through donations from members of the public and we distribute to a large number of needy organisations, ranging from chidlren's homes through to the elderly. We also keep a supply of groceries in our Club larder for unexpected urgent food requests.
Diabetes
On a monthly basis, the Club offers free diabetes screening and blood pressure testing. Annually we sponsor at least one diabetic child to attend an annual Diabetic Camp where they learn to handle their diabetes, have fun and make lifelong friends.
Sight
The Club arranges free eye testing through a local Optometrist, and the Club provides funding for spectacles which are made up by Lions BrightSight (for more information on Lions BrightSight click here).
Hearing
The Club source used hearing aids for those in need. Several persons have been assisted with testing and the fitting of hearing aids. We have also supported the School for the Hearing Impaired and Physically Challenged.
Winter Warmth
Our annual "Anything Warm Campaign" brings in a huge amount of warm clothing, blankets, etc which are sorted and distributed to Childrens' Homes, Homes for the Elderly, and many others in need of warmth in our community.
Children
Besides receiving warm clothing for our "Anything Warm Campaign", we knit and collect hundreds of beanies and scarves for children in need - very often including an Easter egg for each child at the same time. At Christmas we supply hundreds of "goody bags" to needy children, and toiletry bags to a number of needy teenagers.
Mentally & Physically Challenged
The Club has donated several new wheelchairs to the disabled and elderly plus we stock a number of wheelchairs and walking aids etc which we continue to loan out to those in need.
Elderly
A couple of times a year our club provides a jelly and icecream treat to all those in Frail Care at Mooi Haven.
As often as posible we provide assistance to the elderly who are accomodated by "The Elders Voice" by way of groceries, clothing, household items, funding towards medicinal requirements, a bath chair, commode and TV.
At times members have been asked to assist by taking an elderly person to hospital for a check up or to collect scripts and medicines.
Environment
Our club takes part in the planting of trees for Arbour Day, participates in the annual Coastal Clean-Up, and supports recycling by making Ecobricks, collecting spectacles, hearing aids, aluminium can ring pulls towards training of Guide Dogs, bread tags and plastic bottle tops towards wheelchairs.
Peace Poster Competition
Annually we support / convene The Lions International Peace Poster Competition by way of encouraging schools in our community to participate, inviting impartial judges to do the judging, and we hold a special evening to which we invite teachers and participating pupils, parents and teachers.
House Fires
We have assisted a number of families who have lost their possesions through house fires.
Face Masks (COVID-19 Pandemic)
With help from members of the public we have been able to hand out a huge number of face masks during the pandemic.
Fundraising
In order to raise funds to finance our many projects and to provide assistance where needed in the community we hold various fund raising events.
All our funds raised at these events are utilized solely for charitable purposes. All Lions serve on a voluntary basis and never gets paid.
