History and Information
The Guam Sunshine Lions Club, chartered in January 1997, chose "Caring for the Sick and the Elderly," as its primary service project. Proceeds of annual fundraisers go towards: (1) providing monetary assistance to individuals going off-island for medical treatment due to lack of local specialized services; and to: (2) providing hygiene essentials and other needs to homebound elderly or sick individuals; the items, along with song and cheer, are made during home visits by club members. Medical equipment such as wheechairs, transport chairs, walkers, bedside commodes, bathtub/shower seats, and other items have also been provided to the needy. Donations and visits to the various Senior Citizen Centers are done annually. Examplies of donations include: three electric medical beds costing $6,500 donated to a senior care facility. In May 2020 $10,000 in cash and food were given to 100 unemployedindividuals who lost their jobs during the pandemic. In 2022, $10,000 in food vouchers were given to 100 struggling families. In May 2022, the GSLC and the Guam Marianas Training Center collaborated to grant a graduating high school senior a course of his/choice in the School of Allied Health which would enhance opprtunities for job employment. In June 2023, $10,000 was donated to 100 families, victims of Super Typhoon Mawar.
In addition to activities related to the club's primary service project, members also participate in LCI's various areas of service such as vision, diabetes, environment, hunger relief, and disaster relief. Eyeglass collections; health screenings; cleanups of parks, beaches and roadways; hunger feedings to the homeless; and donations for disaster victims are some examples of club activities.
In support of the "Sick and the Elderly," the club acquired a $90,000 paratransit bus: made possible by raising $30,000, a matching LCI grant of $30,000, and $30,000 from Catholic Social Services. The bus was delivered to Catholic Social Services on December 10, 2016.
In the spirit of fostering international friendship, peace, and understanding, the Guam Sunshine Lions Club twinned with the Okayama Asahi Lions Club of Japan in 2002 and with the Iloilo Executive Lions Club in the Philippines in 2004.
Two club branches were formed under the sponsorship of the Guam Sunshine Lions Club: the Tano-Ta Club Branch which became a regular Lions club and the Guam Un Guinaiya Club Branch, formed in December 2018. The Guahan Isan Famagu'on Lions club was chartered in 2018 under the sponsorship of the Guam Sunshine Lions Club.
