Our History

For more than 10 years, the Grimsby & District Lions have served our community with kindness. We are a group of community members who are committed to making a difference both locally and globally. We do this through various service projects and fundraising events that support local and global causes.

Though the Grimsby & District Lions Club was officially re-established in 2015, community service and Lionism in Grimsby date back to 1938. As a driving force for many community projects, the original Grimsby Lions Club made significant contributions to the community of Grimsby we know today.

In 1942, Dr. MacMillan and Lion Sandy Globe had a discussion about the need for a community hospital. Sandy made a presentation to the Lions Club, and they immediately joined the fundraising efforts to build the hospital. Tragedy struck in 1948 when the Hospital burned down, however Lion Sandy continued to lead the drive to rebuild the Hospital, which serves our community to this day.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the Grimsby Lions Club sponsored swimming lessons through the Red Cross at Grimsby Beach. The club also sponsored various youth sports teams and Boy Scout troops. In the late 1950s, the club assisted with the land clearing needed to create Coronation Park. In 1963, the club commemorated their 25th year with the opening of the  Lions Community Pool in the park. Lions Community Pool and Coronation Park continue to be enjoyed by families in Grimsby today.

Now, The Grimsby and District Lions Club continues to serve our community in many ways. Each year, we host a number of fundraising events like community BBQs, an annual High Tea, E-Recycling and more. The heart of our Club though, is our Service Projects. Whether it's helping stock shelves at the Grimsby Foodbank, installing nesting structures at the Grimsby Wetlands, coordinating a Winter Clothing Drive, or serving at local events like the Coldest Night of the Year, the Grimsby Lions are always ready to serve our community in meaningful ways. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Grimsby Legion. Interested in joining us? Reach out to mail@grimsbylions.org for more information.
