Visit to Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre
 
LCG visited Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre on 22nd June  to carry out Hunger Relief project. The centre had 30, 16-26-year old young adults (15 girls +15 boys) with physical and developmental challenges. The learners train here in Textile, Cookery and Horticulture skills. 
LCG went with food (millie meal, macaroni, cooking oil, tinned food) for the trainees and spent quality time with them. The trainees and the staff extended a very warm welcome to LCG members. They sang, recited poetry (written by themselves), and danced for the LCG members, who also joined and shared a joyous moment with them. Finally LCG distributed bananas to all the trainees and staff members, and before saying goodbye to them, took group photographs.
 

 

Tree Plantation (Environmental Project)

On 5th June, on the World Environment Day, LCG conducted an Environment project at Itumeleng Primary School. This school runs an Environment Club with 200 students and a couple of staff members. LCG planted fruit trees (orange, lemon, peach, guava & Chinese apple) along with those pupils and environmental coordinators of the school. At the end the students promised to take care of their school and home environments by watering plants & taking care of them regularly. LCG also donated a token amount of BWP 1200/- to the school's Environment Club, to use it to preserve their school environment, as & when required. On 5th June, on the World Environment Day, LCG conducted an Environment project at Itumeleng Primary School. This school runs an Environment Club with 200 students and a couple of staff members. LCG planted fruit trees (orange, lemon, peach, guava & Chinese apple) along with those pupils and environmental coordinators of the school. At the end the students promised to take care of their school and home environments by watering plants & taking care of them regularly. LCG also donated a token amount of BWP 1200/- to the school's Environment Club, to use it to preserve their school environment, as & when required. 

RAP (Environmental Education)

On 5th June, on the World Environment Day, LCG visited Itumeleng Primary School and spent some time with class 2 children and had a story telling session with them. The Environmental projects coordinator read a story to the children which was then linked by the Lion President to the significance of World Environment Day, and the benefits of tree plantation and preservation of environment. At the end the students promised to take care of their school and home environments by watering plants & taking care of them regularly. 

 

Paediatric Cancer Project

LCG visited Oncology Department of Princess Marina Hospital along with the Doctors, Volunteers & other staff members of Baylor Botswana Centre of Excellence to distribute gifts to Paediatric Cancer patients. Children & their caregivers were extremely happy to get Art Materials, toiletries and toys from the LCG members. Nine LCG members participated in the event where Dr. Sloane & Dr. Maria Dunn accompanied them to the wards. It was an overwhelming experience. May God give the young ones comfort & strength to overcome the  situation. 
 

Disaster Preparedness and Relief to Sheltered Women and Children

LCG visited Kagisano Society Women's Shelter at Broadhurst today, the 25th May 2018 for the 3rd time to keep the promise to engage with the society in various ways. This time also LCG concentrated on Hunger Relief and donated milk, mealimeal, oil, and food hampers to banish hunger and provide nutrition to the sheltered women and children of the centre.  

Disaster Preparedness and Relief to Sheltered Women and Children 

LCG visited Kagisano Society Women's Shelter at Broadhurst today, the 19th April, 2018 as in the past it had offered to engage with it in various projects. LCG donated milk, mealimeal, mabele, rice, sugar, macaroni, oil, mayonnaise, caned beans & fish to the centre. It being a centre for women, LCG donated Sanitary Napkins & other toiletries like soap, toilet rolls, tissues also at the request of the centre.  

Wheel Chair Donation

LCG engaged in Community Service at the Chesire Foundation on 16th April, 2018 and donated a Wheel Chair to Thato Princess Molosiwa, a well deserved child from Blok 7, Gaborone. This was done at the request of Office of the President. The presentation was made by the LCG in the presence of 2 officers from the Office of the President, the executive director and members of the Cheshire Foundation, where the child visits as a daycare candidate. The child is picked up in a vehicle owned by the foundation everyday, except for the weekends & public holidays. 

Relieving the Hunger Project - 7

LCG visited Mother Pontsho foundation in Mopane on 27th March. This centre looks after vulnerable and orphan children. At present there are around 70 children. UB Leo Club identified the project & LCG donated food items (milk, maize meal, fruits) and clothes to the children in the centre. Leos and Lions played with the children spent time with them. It was very fulfilling seeing the smiling faces of the children. Mother Pontsho the founder of the centre informed Lions that they depend on donations and sponsorship from the public to feed the children once they are back from the school.    

Disaster Preparedness and Relief 

LCG collected BWP 1700/- and clothes for Maun Flood victims from fellow Lions. The clothes and money was handed over by Lion Meera to Lion Lyod of Lobatse on 23rd March, 2018.  

Centennial Legacy Project

Hand over of Primary School in a remote village, Letoreng, 250 Kms away from Gaborone, the Capital city of Botswana. The school was handed over to the then President of Botswana, HE Seretse Khama Ian Khama officially on 19th March, 2018. The school is operational from January 2018.  

Shelter Services to Kagisano Centre 

LCG visited Kagisano Society Women's Shelter at Broadhurst on 23rd Feb. This centre can accommodate 25 inmates, women and children, who are basically victims of gender based violence. The centre not only provides shelter & food to the inmates but also provides counselling to the victims & perpetrators, and rehabilitates them when they are ready. The LCG members donated food items (Groceries, Meat, Milk) & toiletry (Toilet Roles, Sanitary Napkins, Tissues) for sheltered women & children. The LCG members met with the volunteers and listened to the inspiring activities done by the NGO. The  LCG members bonded with the NGO & offered to engage in many more projects in future, to help the inmates of the shelter.

Relieving the Hunger Project - 6

Cake Sale Project

In December-2017, LCG bought 300 Cakes from South Africa @ BWP 95/- and sold for BWP 135/- each as a apart of Fund raising Project. Total profit was BWP 9360/-.  

Relieving the Hunger Project - 5

On 11th December, LCG wound down the day by sharing the food hampers with 50 children to banish hunger and provide nutrition to the orphan & vulnerable children of Stepping Stones as part of thrir 5th Relieving the Hunger project. Before closing the event, the children thanked LCG for providing them with nutritios & healthy food & requested the Lions to come again.  

Tree Plantation

LCG participated in one of the last activities of 2017 wirh 40 children and 10 staff members of Stepping Stones, Mochudi. The Lions engage in one of the initiatives to improve our environment - tree planting activity. The children were briefed about the importance of trees in our daily life and their effects on our environment. After wards the lions were led to the gardening area were holes were already dug by the children for planting the fruit trees [Guava, Popo &  Pomegranate], L Lillian planted the Popo tree, Teacher Connie planted the Guava tree & a bright pupil planted the Pomagranate one. Finally the plants were watered using a cute watering can. Besides the environment effect, the planting of the 3 trees symbolised the growth of the relationship between the Lions, Stepping Stones management and the participants.

Carols by Candle Light-Toy and Clothes Collection 

On 26th Nov., Lions Club of Gaborone organised Carols by Candle Light at Grand Palm with 5 other Service Clubs (Rotary, Round Table, Ladies Circle, Agora, Inner Circle). The evening was very pleasant. Children were in colourful clothes with their parents & holding gifts, some were playing Marimba, others were leading carol singing, some were reading verses from the Bible, others were lighting candles. All were busy singing, swinging & were in mood to celebrate X-Mas. Simply gorgeous. At the end, a lot of gifts were collected by Santa Clause who then distributed them all to the Service Clubs for charity. 

Reading Action Programme-3

On 21st Novemeber, the Lions Club of Gaborone had a successful RAP at Batlang Support Group. The children listened to the story line and participated well answering questions based on the story read to them. Both the children and their teachers were happy to have the Lions with them. Lions shared some snacks, fruits & juices with them. The school requested the activity to continue. Lions participated in the activity on a cloudy, rainy,  weekday. 

Eye Screening: Gamodubu Childcare Trust

On 19th Novemeber, Lions Club of Gaborone had another day of service today, conducted an Eye Screening activity at  Gamodubu Childcare Trust. LCG Screened 135 people, which comprised of 80 children & 55 adults & elderly people. The activity started with a childrens' prayer followed by the introductory remarks by Hon. Mme Mma Kokorwe, our distinguished member, who then lead the registration. 16 participants, 9 Lions, 4 dedicated Leo's & 3 prospective Lions contributed to the marathon task of preliminary screening, followed by thorough examination where needed, & distribution of refreshments. We provided reading glasses to 30 needy patients only. Our project coordinator Lion Manish managed the show very professionally. During the event, Lion Praveen Krishnan from India (former RC of Dist 318D) visited us too. Shirley Madikwe of Gamodubu Childcare Trust made very good local arrangements & expressed her heartfelt gratitude to LCG for being there & helping villagers. 

Relieving the Hunger Project - 4

On 17th November, Lions Club of Gaborone went & shared food with 36 children with special needs at the Annie Stein Home at Molepolole. Lions & Leo's from the LCG & Molepolole Club participated in the event. The Chairman, manger, staff & the children of the centre were very happy to be with us. They acknowledged our services with an wall paonting painted by each child of the centre. 

World Diabetes Day
 
On 11th Nov. World diabetes day was celebrated  at Ramotswa Kgotla by Lions Club of Gaborone in collaboration with diabetes Association of Botswana and other partners.  The theme was "Women and diabetes our right to  a healthy future".
Lions Club of Gaborone Greater and Lions Club of Lobatse joined the event & volunteered the services. Gaborone Leo Club's President Leo Daniel, alongwith Leo Letso Kenosi & Leo Andrika in the true spirit of service extended a great helping hand. Thirteen Lions participated with a great enthusiasm. The presence of Lions from Maun Greater, Lobatse and Region Chair Lion Tshidi were of great support & highly motivating.  

Relieving the Hunger Project - 3

On 28th October, Lions Club of Gaborone conducted it's 3rd Relieving the Hunger Project for the children at the Gabaresepe Day Care Centre, Old Naledi Village. It shared milk, bread, bananas & sweets with a large number of children (around 200) of all ages including the toddlers. Lion Harish coordinated the project with the help of Sister Maya. Lion volunteers were there along with Region Chair Lion Tshidi & Prospective Lion Shilla Kapini, who helped us distribute the goodies to the children with much ease. Eye Screening: Let's Move Day

On 22nd October Lions Club of Gaborone had a day of service by holding the Eye Screening Activity for the Community People as part of the Let's Move Day community health walk & expo held by Seventh-day Adventists Church. It screened 102 persons in by Optometrist Prospective Lion Manish single handedly, assisted by Lion members. A number of Lion members & Leos were present in a big number in their blue Jackets to make the event a successful one. 

Peace Poster Award Project

On 21st October Lions Club of Gaborone had a Peace Poster Award Ceremony, hosted by Bothlale International School. Nine (9) schools participated, 6 from Gaborone & 3 from Molepolole. The UNICEF Country & SADC Representative Ms Julianna Lindsey was the Guest Speaker & gave a motivating speech. The principal of the hosting school also said a few encouraging words. The function went off very well. It had a very good turnout, teachers from all the schools, all participating children & their parents attended the function. We managed to have a Media Coverage (BTV & Daily News) too, (hope to share with you soon). Lion members & Leos were present in a big number in their blue Jackets to make the event a successful one. 

Relieving the Hunger Project - 2

Lions Club of Gaborone was busy taking part in Relieving the Hunger project on 29th September. The members visited Gamodubu Child Care Trust, offered milk, biscuits, apples, fruit juices, potatoes, butternut, tomatoes, meat for 40 less fortunate orphans & vulnerable children, spent time with them, clicked pictures & had a lovely time with all of them. Thanks the Leos & Lions for coming & supporting the activity on a heavily rainy day.

Reading Action Programme - 2

In celebrating World Literacy Day, the Club conducted Reading Action Programme at Stepping Stones International on 19th September. The lions were welcomed by 62 pupils, 5 teachers and a couple of administrative staff all eager to hear something new from the blue Lions of Gaborone Club.The Lions divided themselves into 2 groups and demonstrated their skills by reading books and news papers to the 12-25 year old beneficiaries, followed by simple questions to check whether they understood the concepts or the messages. After the reading session the two groups came together and the Lions were entertained with nice melodious music whilst serving them with snacks. A group photo was then taken. Lastly the lions gave roughly 200 plus assorted literature books to the centre.  

Eye Screening: Pabalelo Hospice, Metsimotlhabe  

On 2nd September Lions Club Gaborone took the initiative of Eye Screening and providing free reading glasses to those who will need them. 152 people were screened and 115 reading glasses were donated to old and needy community people. Lion Tanuja, President of the Lions Club of Greater Gaborone and a qualified Optometrist volunteered her services to this activity.

Relieving the Hunger Project - 1

Lions Club Gaborone took the initiative of providing healthy food items to Cancer & TB clinic in Gaborone extension-12 on 26th August. The Cancer & TB clinic is taking care of more than 40 patients. Food items like fruits, biscuits and Mageu were given to 40 patients. Social worker volunteer, Sister Maya helped in facilitating the feeding scheme.  

Reading Action Programme - 1 

The members of the club were invited to celebrate the Basic Education Day by Itumeleng Primary School on the 24th August, as the Club engaged in RAP Programme with the school earlier and donated a number of books worth P500/ for the children. Eight (8) members attended the function and spent 4 hours with them.

Construction of Primary School in a remote village, Letoreng, 250 Kms away from Gaborone, the Capital city of Botswana. The school will be handed over officially to the Govt. soon, and it will be operational from January 2018.
