Flags Over Sunsites

Show your patriotism by displaying a flag in front of your home or business during ten major holidays throughout the year.  The Lions Club will provide the flag, display it in the morning and remove it at the end of the day.  The subscription fee for this service is only $40.00 a year and the money goes to eye care and other needs in the community.  You may print this application to subscribe.

Dinners

We hold special dinners at the VFW Post to raise funds for our many donations.

Vision Screening, Exams and Glasses

When school starts in the fall, we provide eye screenings for several elementary schools in the area using SpotVision machines.  We also sponsor the Arizona Vision Center eye mobile twice a year at the Sunsites Community Center.  Our greatest service is to provide eye exams and glasses for those who cannot afford them.  We collect eye glasses, hearing aids and cell phones at several locations in Sunsites for recycling.

Scholarships

We provide a $2,400 scholarship to a high school graduate enrolled at Cochise College in at least a two-year program leading to a degree or profession.

Playground Equipment and Cover

Our club organized a community wide fund raiser in 2010 to purchase the playground equipment at the Stronghold Area Recreational Park.  Later we assisted with the purchase of the shade canopy.

Heliport

Our largest project in conjunction with several other organizations in the community was to build a medical evacuation heliport.  This two-year project raised over $37,000 because of the hard work of the local community and generous donations from a few individuals and businesses in the area.  The Charlie Appel Memorial Heliport in honor of the LifeNet 12 crew who lost their lives in a tragic accident in Tucson was dedicated on February 24, 2012.

Literacy

Our club sponsors two Scholastic Book Fairs at Pearce Elementary where students are able to select several books for themselves.  We also invite the students from MeNeal Elementary.  Every student gets at least one book.

Breadbasket

We provide financial support our local food bank each year.

Lions Little Library

Our club built, installed and registered a Little Free Library at the 103 N. Frontage Road in Sunsites as a Lions Centennial project.  Everyone is welcome to borrow or keep a book and donate books back to the free library.

Holiday Baskets

Our club provide cheer baskets for elderly single persons and those at Casa De Angeles Assisted Living at Christmas.  We also provide baskets on Easter for those in assisted living.

Dictionaries for Third Graders

We provide an age-appropriate dictionaries for all third-grade students in ten schools in the area.

Earth Day

We recently started a project to collect old electronics and take them to an recycling organization in Tucson.

Sunsites Calendar

We compile and publish a monthly calendar of events in the Sunsites area.
