Hale School Year 12 Student Wins WA's Lions Youth of the Year
2 September 2024

Dirk Avery, President Lions Claremont-Nedlands; Margaret Amm, National Youth of the Year Coordinator; Digby House; Kim Wilkinson, WA Coordinator.

Digby House, a Year 12 student and prefect at Hale School, has won the Western Australia Lions Youth of the Year for 2024. The Lions Youth of the Year recognises students aged 15 to 18 who are interested in contributing to the community and their school and who have a passion for public speaking, sport, cultural involvement and learning. Digby went on to be a national finalist with seven other students at the Lions National Conference held in Darwin on 23 May.

At Hale School, Digby participated in the public speaking club and was encouraged by teacher Dr. Melanie Hindley to develop his skills by entering into the Lions Youth of the Year. Digby also has participated in community projects with the Salvation Army, Multiple Sclerosis events and has an interest in promoting good mental health and supporting programs.

Digby found that his participation in the Lions Youth of the Year further developed his interview skills as he met with a variety of Lions judges who have diverse knowledge and life experiences. Digby believes that young people should be involved in a wide range of events and should not regret having done more during their time at school. “Try and experience as much as you can,” he says, “I am involved in drama, playing the sax and public speaking.”

The Lions Youth of the Year awards the national winner a prize of $5,000 and the public speaking winner $2,500. More information is available on the Lions Clubs website.
