The Moorooka Lions Story

The Moorooka Lions Club was chartered on May 17, 1965.

The Club started due to the initial effort of five members from the Western Districts Club, (now known as Brisbane Oxley-Sherwood Lions Club Inc.) who formulated a plan to establish a Lions Club in the Moorooka area early in 1965. Ted Kalinin, (the late) PDG Peter Greer, Graham Vann, Bill Leech, and (the late) Les Reid were instrumental in attracting 26 men for membership enabling them to formally launch the Club in that year.

The Charter Presentations was held on 24th of June at the old Lennons Hotel located at that time on the corner of George and Ann Streets in Brisbane. John Thorpe who was elected the first President of the club, received the Charter from the then World President of the Lions, Lion Walter Campbell.

With the club now in full swing, the members proceeded to construct seats for the Moorooka Lions Bicentennial Picnic Grounds (formerly Gow Park) at Moorooka as their inaugural project. These seats are still in use to this day, and subsequent additions to this project in later years has included the erection of a Gazebo, the installation of barbeques and more recently a covered children's playground and additional park benches.

In 1969 a club building and $2,000 was donated by the Moorooka Progress Association to the Moorooka Lions. The building is permanently leased and has been a great source of revenue for the club throughout the years. The Chardon's Hotel raffles, which has also been a great source of income, was also started in this year and unfortunately has in recent years ceased.

The Moorooka Lions first Miss Personality Quest entrant, Miss Julie Hunt, took out that title in 1973 at a function held at the Schonell theatre at the Queensland University. In 1975 the Yeronga Meals on Wheels (jointly financed by the Moorooka, Yeronga, and Ekibin clubs as well as a local community fund) was opened. In 1978, Moorooka Lions supplied a fully equipped ambulance for the Moorooka Ambulance Brigade. The cost of almost $15,000 was met by the Lions and the Queensland Government on a dollar for dollar basis.

Moorooka Lions have been highly visible in the community. Funds were regularly donated to Blue Care, a home nursing organisation. The club has supported many organisations dealing with the handicapped, visual impairment, Autistics, Paraplegic welfare, Australian Defence Veterans and Multiple Scleroses. There has been regular donations to various medical foundations and groups dedicated to assistance for the less fortunate.

Currently each year Moorooka Lions activities include conducting a Citizenship Ceremony on Australia Day, conducting a Family Fun Day and a Christmas Lights Festival.

The Club also sponsors the Brisbane Christian College Leos Club assisting youg students in becoming more community aware.

Membership dues cover all Club administrative expenses.   Our charter does not allow us to use any money raised through fund raising projects for other than those of non-profit Lions and community programs.

The Club celebrated its 50th birthday with a Dinner Dance on Saturday 23 May 2015 at the Francis Rush Centre, Charlotte Street, Brisbane, next to the Cathedral of St. Stephens.
