LIONS FACE CHALLENGE FOR YEAR AHEAD
With Lions Clubs; Past Council Chairman Bob Stanic setting the tone with a relaxed but formal ceremony at the Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions' Club's Officer Installation, the Lions sworn in promised to uphold the principles of Lionism enshrined in the words "We Serve".
This Installation the 36th in the long history of Lions in the twin areas of Blockhouse Bay and Lynfield heralds fresh challenges in the year ahead to serve the needs of the Community.
With many commitments to Diabetes Awareness projects, care for seniors, inspiring and sponsoring youth of the area with Speechmakers, Young Ambassadors and scholarship support, they have sponsored and supported the local Community Patrol from its inception, plus many Regional, National and International projects.
But the biggest challenge they face this year is to increase their membership to be able to do even more in the Community. As their participation in the Bay Connections initiative with the Community Centre reveals even more pressing needs in the area, the Lions are keen to be able to help, calling on the worldwide expertise of the Lions Clubs International Organisation as well as their Senior members with local knowledge.
So over the next months they will be asking local residents to take up the challenge and join them to help make Blockhouse Bay and Lynfield a better place, with an input of new ideas, any expertise in organisational skill with willingness and ability to spend a few hours each month helping others less fortunate than themselves. The work is punctuated with monthly Dinner Meetings and wherever possible, interesting guest speakers, featured themes and varied menu.
President Janelle and her members welcome interest from anyone wanting take up the challenge. In the near future an Information evening will be held to showcase the club and how life changing being a Lion can be. People working together for a goal can achieve far more than an individual in isolation.
Accept the challenge now and Phone 836 3699, 620 0722 or 625 6689 or go to http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/blockhousebaynz/

TOP LIONS’ AWARD FOR BLOCKHOUSE BAY-LYNFIELD LION
Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions Club has honoured Lion Alan Gray with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Named after the founder of Lions in USA in 1917, the award is one the highest forms of recognition for individual members in Lions Clubs International, as nominated by a club.
Receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship from Privileged Lion Kevin Cooney right, and President Janelle Collins centre, Alan gave credit to his wife Barbara left for supporting him over his 36 years of Community Service.
Alan is a charter member of the Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions Club which started in 1977, and he has spent the last 36 years working with fellow Lions in the community helping those in need. He has held all offices in the club including President and Secretary several times, and his work with the District and club website (http://e-clubhouse.org/sites/blockhousebaynz/) has resulted in several District and International Presidents Appreciation awards. His abilities were recognised at District level where for16 years he served on Cabinet as Zone Chairman, District Bulletin Editor, Leadership and then District Health Chairman, leading the campaign against diabetes.
The diabetes role project led to his club’s commitment to diabetes awareness. Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield Lions allied with other West Auckland clubs and the McCosh Family Trust to raise awareness, screen and refer those who require intervention to medical practitioners for follow up. Alan spent many hours assisting in training Lions to do this throughout Auckland and district. Alan also help organise the local Lions mobility clinics for children with cerebral palsy. He was instrumental in Blockhouse Bay providing a venue for fitting and adjusting of the Hart Walker machines that enable the children to walk. Seeing the smiles from the children as they make their first steps in their Hart Walker is reward enough he says.
Past District Governors, Michael Kemp and Ron Thompson also gave testimony to his work with diabetes awareness and the Mobility Clinic.
Past Council Chairman Bob Stanic who conducted the Installation of Officers on that night endorsed their sentiments.
As a footnote Lion Kevin Cooney now a member of Blockhouse Bay-Lynfield has 53 years service to his credit, hence the Privileged status. He was the chairman of the original Mt Roskill Lions Committee that Chartered Blockhouse-Bay Lynfield.
Other awards on the evening were:
Below, Peter Schultz Memorial Award for Lions voted by fellow members "Lion of the Year" went to Privileged Lion Member Kevin Cooney. Presented by Late Charter President Peter's wife Barbara.
Below, Appreciation Award from President Janelle went to Treasure Lorraine Warren and husband Lion Ray Warren for exception al service in admin and projects.
