A few years ago the Black Mountains  Lions donated &   planted 3 trees on the grass verge outside the Haygarth doctors surgery in Talgarth

Mysteriously one  disappeared!!!

Black Mountain Lions Davd James & Ken Lloyd, together with BML Friend, Les Bowen, planted another last week to replace it.

We hope this one willl will grow & favour us with blossom in the Spring.

We always need help & new ideas with some our projects & would love members of our local public to offer help in any way they can, however small.  New ideas are always welcome.

Come  to one of our meetings (1st Wednesday in every month. For more information please contact  David on 01497 820227 or Cheryl at cherylhyde@btinternet.com

A Visit to the National Memorial Arboretum

Lions David James and Cheryl Hyde recently visited the Lions Cabin at the Arboretum in Shropshire.

We were moved to find a complete list of Lions lost to us between 2019 to 2020. Among the many was our own Hilda May Davies who had been our Youth officer.  She enjoyed visiting the schools for either giving out prizes, judging competitions or manning the Annual School Quiz.  We miss her.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER & think of those that need help in the community.

It’s been a tough year for everyone, but we have continued to help in a lesser way in our community despite not being able to carry out our usual fundraising events.

These are really hard times for some, but we have managed to donate £200 in September & £250 in December to the Hay Food Bank. We also donate our usual annual £200 to the Royal British Legion & our President Chrissie Hallett laid our Remembrance wreath in November.

Despite the problems with pupils attending school at the moment we did manage to hold the usual Peace Poster competition which was won by Nia Wilkins.  When we return to some normality we will be presenting her prize along with certificates for 2nd & 3rd place. Our thanks to their art teacher for her help.

Hay Luncheon Club was unable to hold their usual Christmas dinner, but we contributed £150 towards hampers which were sent to all their Members.

Glasbury Community Council requested help to purchase a defibrillator. We were able to contribute £500 towards the cost.

£200 also went to a student towards the cost of upgrading his computer, enabling him to continue his university home studies as he could no longer make use of the university facilities.

Hopefully we will be back fundraising later this year and will be able to help our community even more.

If you would like to donate or can help in any way please contact Cheryl on cherylhyde@btinternet.com or David on 01497 820227.  All help is welcome.

TACKLING OCEAN PLASTIC

A teacher & auther ohas written 3 No. 1 bestselling books about the problem of ocean plastics for Primary & preschool children. The aim is to inspire & engage a whole generation of chidren across the uk with this issue & how they can get involved in their community. These books are already in every Primary school in Cardiff, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Chepstow & Ammanford, reaching 40,000 children in Wales so far.

Black Mountains Lions have purchased 6 sets and distributed them to all our local Primary Schools.  The response was extremely positive as these stories compliment actions already being taken in our local schools.  Every child can relate to the true stories & happy endings.  In turn the children are inspiring their families, schools & local businesses & the wider community.

Pendry Herdman sets sail with Adam on their great adventure

'Last summer, thanks to the generosity and support of the Black Mountains Lions Club who helped fund the trip with a donation of £500, Penry Herdman joined the Jubilee Sailing Trust with the aim to assist a crew of disabled veterans to sail around the North Island of New Zealand aboard the Tenacious, (a Tall ship specially adapted to cater for people with all types of disability). Penry was supporting Adam who sustained injuries in combat while serving in the British Army.

After flying out to New Zealand, Penry joined the crew in Auckland and embarked on a 7 day sail around the North Island and surrounding isles. His shipmates for this sail were from all walks of life, including veterans who had suffered injuries during active service.  Disappointingly for the 1st few days there was very little wind so time was spent getting to know the ropes and acquiring their sea legs.

Having never sailed before, he and a group of friends from college learned the necessary skills required to sail a Tall ship, from knot tying to feeding the entire crew. During their time on the ship they also learned what life was like for their disabled ship mates and assisted them with day to day tasks. Everyone had the chance to reach the Crows Nest apart from Penry who unfortunately was on watch!  Everyone took part in producing meals in the specially adapted galley.  Days on shore allowed them to visit the local island of Waiheke, where they were taught how to evacuate handicapped personnel on life rafts. Afterwards they sampled some of the local delicacies before returning to the ship for their final day of sailing. Not only was Pendry presented with a once in a life time opportunity, he had also been informed of the difficulties faced by 15% of the world's population.

In the words of Pendry -

“I am eternally grateful for the opportunity provided by the Jubilee Sailing Trust, as well as the £500 funding and support from the Black Mountains Lions.

This experience is one I will always treasure and I am extremely thankful to those service men and women who made extreme sacrifices in order to keep us safe.'”

Clyro Church in Wales School Playgroup has a NEW SHED.

When their new school opened the old toy storage shed was just TOO old and tired to make the move.  The wood was rotting & the mice were camping out in the soft toys.

Black Mountains Lions stepped in & bought them a new shed complete with storage boxes for the toys, & were welcomed when they went along to meet the children, staff and helpers.

Clyro playgroup is a lovely friendly group for preschool children that meets at 9am on a Monday morning at Clyro school. They have a different craft each week,  share a drink & a snack & have a wide variety of toys to play with. When it is good weather they play outside with the ride ons or the water table, & when the weather is not so good they have the school hall to play in. If your child might go to Clyro school it is a great way for you & them to get to know the school, but because the playgroup is so friendly they cater for children going to a variety of schools to come along for a play & a socialise. Go along for a cup of tea and a chat & your little one can have a good play at the same time: Staff look forward to meeting you.

1st Hay-on-Wye Scouts News

1st Hay on Wye Scout group was formed in June 2017 as part of the Radnor Area Scouts. To date we have 22 Scouts, 18 Cubs and are aiming to set up a Beaver Colony for the 12 young people already on the waiting list.  We are also affiliated to Hay Wyerd Explorers who have 22 young people.

So far this year we have had 7 camps, allowing different groups from the District to join with 1st Hay.

We serve mainly Hay-on-Wye area but do have some young people who travel from as far as Hereford to be with us. We welcome both boys & girls aged from 53/4 to 18 years

We are committed to giving the young people amazing adventures and fantastic opportunities, which would not have been possible without the donation of £2000 from THE BLACK MOUNTAIN LIONS CLUB. Other donation have come from Hay Co-op and some individuals.

The Group Scout Leader has high aims for the coming year, including setting up our own permanent venue, opening Beavers, consolidating equipment making it possible to run camps and events. Most importantly we need to gain assistant leaders across all sections so our young people can reach their full Scouting potential, whilst having lots of fun and gaining life skills.

Anyone interested in joining or helping with the group should contact Claire on Tel: 07717478272 email: hayonwyescoutgroup@outlook.com

BLACK MOUNTAINS LIONS

are happy to able to support Emily Guinane at the start of her journey towards studying  Veterinary  Science  at university in 2019. Emily is a local girl who has studied at Gwernyfed High School achieving high GCSE grades for 10 A* and 2 As.

She is planning a 2 week trip to the Kruger Park in South Africa as a volunteer & will be shadowing a vet who specialises in valuable work with vulnerable species such as the big 5.  The welfare of these animals is imperative to stabilise the fragile ecosystem.  The Black Mountains Lions have contributed £500 towards the £2390 she needs to raise.

This trip will give her a unique insight into the rehabilitation & clinical work that is carried out by professionals in the Reserve & will provide exceptional experience for her start at Vet school.  It will also provide important content for her required Personal Statement and CV.

We wish her success and look forward to seeing her again at our November 7th meeting when we will hear about her experiences.

HAY FESTIVAL CAR PARKING 2018

Our intrepid car parkers were at it again this year.   From left to right: Glen, Andy David, John and Andy.  They were part of a whole team parking cars at PCI during both weekends of the Hay Festival.  The weather was mostly fine – even very warm and sunny with festival goers in merry mood. Our huge thanks go to PCI Pharma Services for allowing us once again to use their car park for raising our funds.

We raised  £7159 over the 2 weekends & every penny of the money will go to help local people & causes, with some going to the Lions nationally and internationally.

BLACK MOUNTAINS LIONS 45th ANNIVERSARY.

Black Mountains Lions (BML) celebrated their 45th Birthday in style on Saturday 17th March 2018.

The BML Club was founded as part of Lions International in February 1973 & every year since has held a Charter anniversary to celebrate it’s birth. 2018 was no exception with Members & guests gathering at the Black Mountain Lodge in Glasbury for a dinner to celebrate, followed by a disco.

Weekend snow was threatened but it didn’t stop BML Members and guests attending.  President Jim Gamon welcomed special guest Josie Person MBE & Paralympian Gold Medalist, who after an introduction answered questions from the floor about her life and current work. Chris Davies MP attended with his wife Liz as well as Talgarth Deputy Mayor Cllr. William Powell & his wife Ria.

Among the assembly were Lion Dignatories and Club members.  We all enjoyed a terrific meal after which concerns about the heavy snowfall forced most guests to head for home.   There were a few diehards who remained for a short while before heading off into the driving snow.

The Club Members have been raising money for 45 years with an aim to helping not only people in its local community but also internationally.

Anyone interested in the work that the Black Mountains Lions do locally should contact David James on 01497 820227  davidjames.23@btinternet.com or Cheryl Hyde on 01497 847464  cheryhyde@btinternet.com

PET -   Personal Energy  Transportation

The Black Mountains Lions donated of £500 which will pay for 2 or 3 PET's for distribution to the Third World.  This donation will enable people to enjoy freedom and mobility that previously was not available to them; they can earn a living or study without being totally reliant on somebody else to get them around.  It helps take them out of poverty.

Mobility. Most of us never give it a second thought. However, for more than 20,000,000 people in developing countries who are unable to walk, it is a major concern. These individuals have suffered the loss of mobility because of landmine explosions, illness, birth defects, disease, or accidents.

The three-wheeled, hand-powered Mobility Carts, manufactured by Mobility Worldwide Florida, Penney Farms (and other Mobility Worldwide Affiliates), provide a means for these physically challenged individuals to achieve the “gift of mobility”.

PET -   Personal Energy  Transportation and it main aim is to give back individuals their independence  and dignity for as little as $250 dollars; a PET can be produced and shipped to where is it is needed.   All products are environmentally constructed with parts that are easily replaceable in the Third World without damaging the local environment.  All packaging can be reused for other purposes, eg. tennis balls are used to protect the PET in a box whilst in transit, which in turn can be passed on to local children.

The Hay-on-Wye Vintage Steam Rally  draws everyone from miles around, as well as visitors holidaying in the Brecon and Black Mountains area.

The Black Mountains Lions always have a couple of stalls with a Tombola and Lions and we are delighted to say that THE SUN SHONE.  smiley

We sported our new banners and gazebo which could probably be seen from the mountain tops.  It drew lots of people anxious to “have a go” at winning a little lion, as they seem to have become a collectable item in the area.  The Tombola was packed with people trying to win anything from a bottle of wine to a dishcloth!!!

Everyone knows that Lions collect spectacles – but what do we do with the cases?  Sell them!  At £2 a time they went like hotcakes.

We raised just under £500 which wasn’t bad at 50p for a Lion ticket, or £1 for 4 tickets at the Tombola – all had to end with a 5.    We all but sold out.

We all had a great time refreshed, occasionally, with coffees and beefburgers.

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR ALREADY

SAILING ON THE TENACIOUS

Penry Herdman is to achieve his ambition to sail on a tall ship with the Jubilee Sailing Trust. (JST)  .  As well as being keenly interested in learning about sailing he wanted to help change people’s lives for the better & one way in which he is going to do this is to participate in a charity sail off New Zealand in the summer of this year, with, & for the benefit of our injured and recovering veterans .  He will be sailing as a “buddie”  to a veteran.

He will be sailing from Aukland on the Tenacious, a square –rigger ship, uniquely designed to accommodate both able-bodied & physically disabled people.  Tenacious is owned by the JST, the world leader in promoting integration between people of all physical abilities through tall ship Sailing.  (www.jst.org.uk)

You can help someone to see!

Lions International run a campaign for collecting old unwanted spectacles. They are teamed with MEDICO in France where they are sorted and sent to all parts of the world where they are distributed to people who are in real need.  The Black Mountains Lions have sent several  thousand over the past few years  BUT WE NEED MORE!  We need you to rummage at the back of your drawers and cupboards and fish out any unused spectacles that you no longer need.

If you are in the Hay-on-Wye area we have collection points at Jackson & Gill Opticians, Back Fold, Hay and the TIC in Talgarth. If you aren't in this area then check with your local Lions Club.

Medico receives all types of glasses, with or without correction, single or bifocal lenses, sunglasses (which are very useful for children working in salt mines in Chili & Peru), frames (even without lenses or broken), lenses without frames etc.

Lions International have a long standing collaboration with MEDICO  & UK Lions together collected around 50,000 in the past year.

MEDICO Provides free medical, dental, and optometric care and educational services to
people in developing countries who have little or no access to basic medical care  www.MEDICO.ORG

HAY-ON-WYE VINTAGE STEAM RALLY 2016

Once again 2016 proved to be a fab day with sunshine all the way.  Thanks to all who supported us and SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

The Black Mountains Lions are proud to be able to help by giving £500.00 towards raising money for a specialised NBS system (Navigated Brain Stimulation).

18 year old Jack Keylock from Hay-on-Wye has been battling with a rare brain tumour for the past 19 months.  The Heads of the Neurology & Oncology Departments at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), who are in charge of Jacks case, have carriedout many complex neuralogical operations.  Before Jack was diagnosed in 2014 he actively played Rugby for Gwenyfed & Hay's Sunday Saints Rugby League & if he had not suffered a mild concussion whilst playing, the tumour would not have been detected so early on.

Jack still has an avid interest in the sport & decided that on his discharge in June he would organise a charity event.  His younger brother, in the Hay Under 16s team was to take on his Dads age group - the retired "Clyro Old Stars".  The match was played on July 17th at Hay St Marys Football Ground. All donations to go towards an NBS system for the hospital.

The Neurology department is continuing to raise money for the specialised Navigated Brain Stimulation (NBS).  So far they have raised £150,000 but the total cost is £300,000.

Fund raising continues with nurses skydiving!  WELL DONE JACK.  Still don't know who won!!!!  Anyone know?

Defibrillator Presentations April 2016

4 more defibrillator have been installed around the area and were officially presented on 8th April startiing at Talgarth and progressing to Felindre, Hay-on-Wye and Glasbury.

I was delighted to be invited to judge again at the Eisteddfod held at Clifford School this year.  A wonderful time was had with a fellow judge, sampling and deciding which welshcakes were the best.  Of course they all were wonderful.  Appetite exremely satisfied I then went on to listen to the music section, then trying to judge the best performance.  Once again it was an impossible task and they should all have come first.  The two pictures show the winners of the music section and all the winners of their groups eg. poetry, handwriting etc

THEY WERE ALL MARVELLOUS.

ISTANBUL VISIT

Jenny and David McKirdy, Members of the Black Mountains Lions Club, visited the Lions Club in Istanbul earlier this year........

"During a recent visit to Istanbul we met up with one of David's Lion friends, Nursel and her friend Kerem.  They took us all over their lovely city and we had a wonderful time.  We gave them a Black Mountains banner,"
