Free Vision/Hearing Screening Programs

Arlington Host Lions is a staunch supporter of the Northern Virginia Eyeglass Recycling Center in Arlington, Virginia.  Tens of thousands of pairs of glasses are cleaned, sorted and boxed to send all over the world.  AHL's working teams are scheduled once a month on the 2nd Wednesday and Thursday.

The Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to wash, sort, read the prescriptions, bag, box, and prepare to ship eyeglasses around the world.  It's an easy way to help folks around the globe - bring a friend to help you!  Call the center at 703-241-7004 for further information

Doorways for Women and Families

“At Doorways for Women and Families, we envision a community where all people live free of violence and have safe and stable housing. That’s why we work to transform the lives of women, men and children who are facing homelessness or suffering abuse in our community. Through the generosity of our partners and supporters, we help our most vulnerable neighbors survive crisis, rebuild their lives and achieve brighter futures.”

Arlington Host Lions, each month, collects donations from our members at the first Tuesday luncheons in support of Doorways for Women and Families.  We donate anything from store gift cards to diapers, toilet paper to disinfectant wipes, and Swiffer wet jet liquid refill cleaner to plastic wrap, to name a few.

For the past three years, during the month of May, Arlington Host Lions have sponsored a fundraiser Ladies Luncheon where we raise funds in honor of Doorways.  The luncheon is a celebration of women with good food, fantastic prizes, a musical tribute and vendor shopping.  A portion of the proceeds from the vendors’ sales is donated to Doorways.

For further information in regards to donations and the Ladies Luncheon, please contact CeeCee L. Evans at FanCeeEvents@gmail.com.

CRi

Each month Arlington Host Lions recognize a resident of the month from CRi for their volunteerism.  The resident, and their sponsor, join us for lunch where we present the resident with a certificate of volunteerism.

During the month of December, our Club honors all monthly residents and selects a resident of the year at our Annual Banquet Luncheon.

CRi assists individuals in the community in creating their own stories of choice, respect & independence.

“CRi began in 1975 when a group of Arlington families, faith groups and government leaders worked with Arlington County to charter an independent nonprofit agency that would bring together and expand efforts to help people with mental health and/or intellectual disabilities.”

Remote Area Medical (RAM) Volunteer Corps

Arlington Host Lions participates in RAM, in Wise County, Virginia.  RAM is a nonprofit, volunteer, airborne medical relief corps that provides free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States, and around the world.

RAM was founded in 1985 by Stan Brock, who worked as an assistant to Marlin Perkins of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

The organization has provided $33,079,038 worth of free health care to 357,368 patients with the help of 36,675 volunteers since its inception. Approximately two-thirds of this total is in the U.S. According to Brock, local licensing requirements for doctors in many states prevent his group from bringing out-of-state doctors to areas where their help is needed.

Tennessee is the only state that has an “Open Borders to Doctors” law on its books. Special exemptions have enabled RAM to hold a few clinics outside the state of Tennessee. One of these — in Wise, Virginia — was the largest RAM clinic held to date, in 2008. RAM is funded through donations and relies on volunteers from the community, as well as professionals including physicians, dentists, optometrists, nurses, pilots and veterinarians to provide care in poorer communities.

Lions Assisted Medical Projects (L.A.M.P.) was adopted to indicate all medical projects in which Lions Club members are involved in Virginia. This will include continued participation in the annual Wise County RAM project. In other words, when you go to the RAM project in Wise County, you are part of the L.A.M.P. team, which assists with the RAM Expedition.
