In addition to above units, Karen Buckley, 4-1015, a J unit, contacted Liz Phipps late Friday in response to our ad in the Weekly Events Flyer and has expressed interest in showing her unit during Renovators’ Showcase.  A message has been left on Ms. Buckley’s voicemail and her willingness to participate will be confirmed over the weekend.  She has recently renovated her unit.  It appears we have 8 confirmed units, two additional possibilities.  The Club will continue to identify additional units in case some owners back out between now and October 10.

Ideas for generating more unit owners to participate by opening up their units for the tour, especially smaller units, G models, and hopefully an L model in Building 4.  An ad was placed in the Weekly Events Flyer asking other unit owners to come forward and ads will appear on WAL CCTV early next week.  This matter will also be discussed at the Lions’ dinner on Monday, September 21.

Status of tickets.  Harold ordered the tickets and many have been distributed to club officers, members, tour participants and Liz Phipps in the Activities Office for sale.  As of our meeting Thursday, $300 was on deposit with Harold.  A commitment to purchase another 15 tickets has been made, and a check for $150.00 will be given to Harold at Monday’s dinner meeting.  So at this point we have generated at least $450.00 in revenue for the event.  Club members will be asked to purchase tickets at Monday’s dinner, so hopefully additional revenue will be realized Monday evening.  Lions members will be encouraged to purchase tickets for sale or distribution to friends, neighbors and other interested residents.  All proceeds should be given to Harold Davey, who will monitor sales and advise officers of progress toward our goal, stated below.

How do we market event?  Advertising for the tour and follow-on reception will appear in Weekly Events Flyers, the October Wheel and WAL CCTV.  Renee will explore preparation of flyers to be posted in building lobbies, and Liz Phipps has offered to post those as they are available.  The greatest resource available are club members, who are encouraged to talk up the event and stimulate interest and participation.

What revenue was generated from last year’s event?  Bob Vaughn’s recollection was that the Club raised about $1,550 in last year’s event.  Club officers have set a goal of between $1,700 and $1,750 for this year’s event, or about a 10% increase over last year.  That translates into the sale of 170 to 175 tickets.

How do we recruit volunteers to sit in lobbies directing residents to open units and staff the units open for inspection?  The Club will need to mobilize a sufficient number of volunteers to staff lobbies (4 people), be present in vacant units or those where the owner or their contractor may not be present (probably another 4 – 6 volunteers), and to pick up the wine, cheese and other food for the reception and help set up the Terrace Lounge for the event (probably another 3 volunteers).  So, at a minimum, we will need 10 – 12 volunteers for the Showcase.  That may exceed the manpower the Club alone can provide.  Club members will be asked to volunteer for specific assignments at Monday’s dinner meeting, and we will need to reach out to other residents to fill in any gaps.

Who will be dedicated to arranging the Wine and Cheese from 4:00 – 5:00 PM in the Terrace Lounge and what coordination do we need with Liz in the Activities Office?  A budget of $300.00 was allocated for hosting the reception.  Bob Vaughn and Ray Foote will coordinate the purchase of the food and wine, and club officers and other members will be able to transport the food and wine into the kitchen in the Terrace Lounge prior to the start of the tour at 1:00 PM.   Harold Davey will man a station in the Terrace Lounge for any additional ticket sales and collection of tickets for the door prizes.  Tom Boyle will coordinate the collection of door prizes for the event, the set-up for the event with Liz Phipps, including up to four easels for mounting of posters, and the set-up of a sound system for the event with Mike Penland, who has helped in prior years and more recently with our recruitment event on the Lower Terrace.  Renee will be responsible for the preparation or acquisition of posters.  Bob Lee will ensure that ample literature on our Club and Lions generally is available, including applications for membership.   Club members will be encouraged to contribute door prizes, and Tom will solicit items from the Hair Salon, Market Café, Landmark Towers Sunoco and others who have contributed in the past.  Once the tour concludes at 4:00 PM, all Club members will report to the Terrace Lounge to assist with the reception.

Meeting adjourned at 3:00 PM.

MINUTES

Members Present:  Tom Boyle, Harold Davey, Vi Davis, Ray Foote, Bob Lee, Irene Mields, Renee O’Brien, Linda Perretta, Luvan Tran Van Don, Bob Vaughn.

President Boyle opened the meeting with the pledge of allegiance and President’s announcements, followed by the Treasurer’s report by Bob Vaughn.  The Club’s total bank balance as of June 15 stood at $2,990.94, with $1,736.26 in the administrative fund and $1,254.68 in the administrative fund.

OLD BUSINSS:

Final recap of Club’s benefit for the Fisher Houses held on Thursday, June 4.  The event raised $5,678.00 for the Fisher House Foundation and the Fort Belvoir Fisher House, plus $201.00 for the Club, or a total of $5,879.00.  Approximately 70 people turned out for the event, and the reaction of club members was favorable.  Thank you notes from the Watergate Lions Club have been mailed to all donors, and acknowledgements from Fisher House are anticipated in the near future.

Report by Renee on the Vision and Hearing screening event at the Sacramento Neighborhood Center on Saturday, June 6 attended by Renee, Woiny and Bob Lee.  Twenty-one area residents were screened for sight and hearing, about twice the number from last year.  Renee described the procedures and offered observations on a couple of residents for whom the testing was particularly relevant.

NEW BUSINESS:

Scheduling upcoming Club events, including the semi-annual Clothing Drive and WAL flea market, and Renovators Showcase.  Subsequent to the meeting, it was learned the flea market is scheduled for Saturday, October 17.   Based on that information, scheduling for the Renovators Showcase and Clothing Drive can proceed.

Ideas were floated by club members on activities the club could sponsor to raise funds, elevate the club’s profile, attract new members and provide a community service.  One idea which resonated was to conduct eyeglass collections in the lobbies of WAL buildings similar to the Clothing Drives.  Currently, residents can drop off eyeglasses at Residents’ Desk, but there is little or no publicity and little credit to the WAL Lions Club.  By sponsoring a formal event, it was felt we could generate more eyeglass donations and amplify the role the Lions play in this important activity.  It was agreed that the Club should sponsor an eyeglass collection event on a weekend day sometime between August 8 – August 16.

Membership Drive.  Ray Foote suggested the Club host a wine and cheese event on the Lower Terrace in August while the terrace is still very active.  Information on the Lions Club can be distributed, club members could interact with prospective new members and we could heighten awareness of the Watergate Lions Club and the role the Club plays in the life of the community.    Sunday, August 23 was suggested as a possible date.  Ray and others will coordinate planning.

There was a discussion of a possible merger with another area Lions chapter.  It was generally felt that a merger would dilute the identity of the WAL Lions Club and impose a considerable degree of inconvenience on members.  Instead, the idea of “partnering” with other clubs was highlighted, including inviting officers of nearby clubs to attend our dinner meetings as guests and have our officers reciprocate.  In that way, there can be a more efficient exchange of information, identifying projects on which we can collaborate with other clubs and improve overall effectiveness.

A proposal to consolidate meetings was discussed whereby the Club would meet once a month for a dinner meeting and any business that needed to be transacted could be conducted at the dinner meeting.  By a vote of 8-1, with one abstention, it was agreed to retain the current twice-a-month meeting schedule.  It was clarified that all meetings are optional for club members, that there is no requirement for any member to attend any meeting, but that consolidation into a single meeting would not permit sufficient time for the Club to conduct its business and make dinner meetings overly long, especially when we have guest speakers.  Of the two meetings, there was a consensus that the dinner meeting was the more important event in that it allowed members to maintain contact with one another on a relaxed, social basis contributing to the cohesion of the Club.  Members who choose not to attend future business meetings can propose agenda items and follow the Club’s business by reviewing the minutes of meetings.

By a vote of 10-0, members agreed to move our dinner meeting to the third Monday of each month, starting in August, and move the business meeting to the first Monday of each month.  As there are no formal business meetings in July and August, the next Club business meeting would be Monday, September 7.  The date of our next dinner meeting remains Monday, July 6 at Fratelli’s, after which it will be moved to the third Monday of each month.  The change was prompted by scheduling conflicts on the part of several Club members and the frequency of holidays falling on the first Monday of the month.  Consideration of alternative days during the week for the Club’s meeting was abandoned as it became clear that any other day created its own set of scheduling conflicts.

There was a lengthy discussion of Club’s dues structure, including how monthly dinners are financed.  Some members expressed the view that quarterly dues of $75.00 are excessive, complicate the task of attracting new members and unfairly penalize those who cannot attend dinner meetings because of other commitments.  It was the view of others that dinner meetings are an important unifying factor for the club and that an “opt-out” provision would depress attendance, complicate the reservations process, jeopardize our current arrangement with Fratelli’s, and that $20.00 was a reasonable cost for dinner.  It was also noted that the $20.00 per meal also funds dinner speakers, their guests and guests of the Club, as well as other activities and events.  By a vote of 7-3, it was agreed to retain the current dues structure.

Bob Lee was asked to contact El Primero as it appears they may now be willing to match Fratelli’s charge of $20.00.  He will report back to the Club at which time members will decide if they wish to alternate dinner meetings between Fratelli’s and El Primero.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 8:30 PM.

President Boyle opened meeting with the pledge of allegiance.  President’s comments.

OLD BUSINESS:

Tentative scheduling of upcoming events:  Clothing Drive, Flea Market, Renovator’s Showcase.

NEW BUSINESS:

Quick overview of the business meeting agenda by President Boyle.

37th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations will take place on Saturday, March 7 at the U.N. in NYC.  Renee O’Brien, LuVan Tran Van Don and Linda Perretta will be attending.  Hopefully, participants will provide an overview of the event at the chapter’s business meeting in March.

Discussion of recent Membership PULSE, specifically the section on the Membership Satisfaction Guide on how to enable a club to meet and satisfy expectations of individual members.  Ray Foote initiated discussion.  Focus was on new activities and initiatives the group could undertake to elevate the profile of the chapter, engage members and contribute to the welfare of our immediate community and beyond.  Ideas discussed were…..:

·   Arbor Day tree planting consistent with environmental ethic of the Lions.

·    Promoting reading and the distribution of books, leveraging the unique asset of the Watergate Library, and arranging for delivery of books and other goods and services to infirm and disabled residents at WAL.

·    Identifying one or two key areas of the community that could be rendered more accessible for those with disabilities and an aging Watergate population.

·    Supporting the Bland Music Competition by making a donation to the group and organizing carpools to maximize turnout among club members.

·   “Adopting” a worthwhile cause and/or organization, with a particular focus on veterans groups, such as Wounded Warriors and the Fisher House Foundation.

·    Enlarging the chapter’s commitment to vision health by sponsoring eyeglass collections in WAL lobbies once or twice a year, similar to the Lions’ Clothing Drive.

Of these ideas, the following were considered the most achievable.

·     Making a $75.00 contribution to the Bland Musical Competition and maximizing turnout for the event at the Lyceum by organizing carpools to transport chapter members to the event on April 12.

·     Books and audio book recordings for military personnel overseas.  Vi Davis will investigate.

·     Lobbying management and the Board of Directors to install ramps and/or railings at one or two strategic locations within the community to facilitate handicapped access.  Irene Mields will help identify one or two particularly troublesome areas and, once identified, Bob Lee will promote idea with the Infrastructure Committee, board and management.

·     Eyeglasses’ collection in the lobbies of Watergate structured along the lines of the Lions’ Clothing Drives and complementing the collection method currently employed.

·     Holding an event to raise funds for the Wounded Warriors or a similar organization.  Vi Davis will do preliminary research.

Progress reports on these activities will be provided at the chapter’s business meeting on February 16.  Interim updates welcome at our dinner meeting on February 2.

GB raised the question of whether there are opportunities available for the Watergate chapter to support and interface with some of the larger priorities of LCI.  It was generally the consensus of the group that, at present, the chapter doesn’t have the membership or financial resources to do this effectively.

Identification of future speakers for club events.  It was suggested that the chapter might invite the WAL General Manager, Steve Wright, a former Lion, to attend and speak at a future event.  Tom Boyle will investigate other opportunities, and all chapter members are encouraged to make suggestions and recommendations.

Meeting concluded with tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King and brief comments and anecdotes from Irene Mields and Harold Davey.

Adjournment at 8:30 PM.  Next scheduled meeting is our February dinner meeting at Fratelli’s on Monday, February 2 @ 6:30 PM.

Dinner Meeting, Monday, January 12, 2015, Fratelli’s Restaurant

Minutes

President Tom Boyle opened the meeting at 6:35 PM welcoming 10 members and two invited guests, Shirley and Roy Wilson, to the dinner meeting.  Shirley and Roy are members of the Bailey’s Cross Roads Lions Chapter, and Shirley is the scheduled guest speaker at the dinner meeting.   President Boyle remembered Carol Cooper and asked chapter members to keep Georgia Hufstedler in their thoughts.  (A get-well card for Georgia was circulated and signed by attending members.)   President Boyle led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and the Lions Creed.

President Boyle briefly introduced the chapter’s guests, and then turned over further introductory comments to Robert Vaughn, a long-time friend of the Wilsons.

President Boyle presented Lion member Bob Vaughn with a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation bestowed and signed by Joe Preston, Lions International President for 2014-2015, in recognition of 36 years’ services as a Lions member.

Meeting broke for dinner.

Guest speaker Shirley Wilson addressed the chapter on the meaning of being a Lion and concept of Lionism.  She mentioned that a Lion doesn’t get “hooked on Lionism” the moment he or she becomes a Lion; rather, it typically takes a Lion to experience one or two life-altering events in order to embrace Lionism.  Ms. Wilson recalled a significant event during her early time as a Lion that caused her to “buy into” Lionism.  The goal of Lionism, she added, is not so much a goal, rather it’s what we do about it that truly matters; that service is rooted in everything we do; that “it takes a team” and the full embrace of the Lions’ motto of “We Serve” to accomplish our mission.

Ms. Wilson offered a number of ideas on what to do to make a Lions chapter more relevant and better known in its community, including:

  • Promoting reading and reading clubs, citing the Lions’ Dr. Seuss Week.
  • Reading with 1st and 3rd graders.
  • Encouraging and establishing recycling centers.
  • Vision and sight screening.
  • Promoting and contributing to the Bland Music Competition, culminating in the April 12 Lyceum event in Alexandria, a program unique to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ms. Wilson concluded her remarks by stressing “the importance of attitude” and playing a song written and sung by Joe Preston, “Strengthen the Pride,” available on YouTube.

President Boyle thanked the chapter’s guests and Ms. Wilson for her presentation.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30 PM.

Business Meeting, May 19, 2014
Minutes

1.         President Tom Boyle opened the meeting by welcoming members to our monthly business meeting.  This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

2.         Tom then asked Zone Chair Luvan to report on the Virginia State Convention which she attended.  (the convention was held at the Sheraton Premier in Tysons Corner, May 15-18, 2014).  Luvan provided the membership with a day by day report of her activities and meetings at the convention.  Several amendments to the Constitution and By-laws were proposed to Lions of Virginia, Multiple District 24.  Details of these amendments are attached to the Secretary’s copy of these minutes and retained in the Club’s files; they will be made available to any member who wishes to review them.

Luvan stated that membership in Lions is declining across the State.  Some discussion followed.   She stated that in Japan, they have increased membership by inviting spouses to join Lions and this has resulted in a large increase in membership.   Irene expressed some concern about the costs of our membership, stating that our $75 dues per quarter prohibit some people from joining our club despite the fact that the dues includes dinner once a month.  Ray reminded everyone that the club (and its members) must provide a meaningful purpose and reason for  becoming a Lion and participating in activities in order to keep members interested in attending.  Many of our members fail to come to meetings (without notice) and do not participate in activities and we must work together to improve this.   It was suggested that we discuss ways to engage our members at every meeting.

3.         Other members who attended the State Convention were Irene Mields, Linda Perretta and Ray Foote.  Irene and Ray reported on the several Lions projects in which other clubs are participating, such as Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence (LPCCI), which was founded in 1983 to help children and adults with disabilities.

Dog Fest Walk ’N Roll - a family-friendly, dog-friendly and completely accessible dog walk and festival will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 9am - 12pm.  Pentagon Row - 1201 South Joyce St., Arlington, Va. 22204.  See dogfestwashingtondc@cci.org.  for additional information.

Several clubs participate in the sale of candies and nuts, but we learned that we must buy in very large quantities in order to save shipping costs.  We decided that our club isn’t of the size to promote such a sale; it’s costly and risky.   Also, restrictions at Watergate prohibiti the sale of merchandise.

3.         GB suggested that we identify a project (one which we might share with another club) to make a real impact our community as well as bringing emphasis on the work of Lions.  Bob Lee suggested that we consider a book project (since we have loads of high quality and a variety of books in our library and in storage units).   As a result, we could assess our community’s needs and encourage increased participation in LCI programs and in close cooperation with LCVF.

4.         Tom and Ray reminded everyone that reservations will be required of members who wish to attend future dinner meetings.  We have experienced a problem with “no shows” at our dinner meetings where the Club has to pay for unnecessary food services because members did not call and/or did not show up at the dinner.  Ray will announce the June 2 dinner meeting, and only those who respond to him and whose dues are current, will have a reservation.   Those who fail to make a reservation are welcome to attend the general meeting but dinner will not be guaranteed.

5.         Everyone was reminded of our Memorial Day Celebration honoring our veterans at Watergate on Sunday, May 25 at 3pm on the lower terrace.

7.         Everyone seems to like the arrangement and the food provided by the Cafe for our dinner meetings; the set up is very nice, the food was very good and you cannot beat the location; thus, we will continue to hold our dinner meetings at Watergate.

8.         Tom stated that In the current Lion Reporter, there is a pertinent quote reading:  “I think if you’re the type of person who wants to join the Lions, it’s because you’re the type of person who wants to do it.  Either you’re a Lion or you’re not.  There’s no in-between.”   Quote from Faye Mirr, zone chairperson and member of the Wauwatosa Lions in Wisconsin.

9.         Tom then presented to Harold Davey with the distinguished Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his many years of service to our Club.  Harold received a standing ovation and congratulations for his long-standing Lionism and community service.

Fratelli’s Restaurant
17 Lions Present; 1 Guest

President Tom Boyle began the meeting at 6:30 PM with welcoming remarks, the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Lions Creed and a prayer of thanks offered by Lion Bob Vaughn.  He then introduced and welcomed Jacqueline Manley’s guest, Phyllis Spinck who lives in Building 2, unit 1821.

President Tom Boyle discussed dinner facilities for future meetings, since the club now has 21 members and the dining rooms at Fratelli’s are crowded and noisy.   Linda Perretta proposed moving our dinner meetings to Osteria Marzano restaurant located at 6361 Walker Lane, Alexandria.  Several members stated they’ve visited that restaurant and recommended it.  Following a brief discussion, Bob Vaughn recommended that we try having our next dinner meeting at Watergate in the Blue Room, and ask the manager of the cafe to provide a buffet dinner (with wine).  Tom asked if everyone would be willing to try this; if it’s not good, we can change the following month.  The next dinner meeting on Monday, April 7th beginning at 6:30 PM, will be held at Watergate.  A reminder will be sent to the membership.

Zone Chair, Luvan Tran Van Don reported on the 35th Winter Conference, held in Fredericksburg, Virginia February 28 through March 2.  She provided information distributed at the conference.

There were several volunteer opportunities on the agenda for discussion.  Specifically, we discussed the Virginia State Convention, May 15-18, 2014 at the Sheraton Premier Hotel in Tysons Corner.  Information on the convention will be forthcoming.  Several members expressed an interest in attending this year.

President Tom Boyle began the meeting at 7:00 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

Tom welcomed everyone to our monthly business meeting and announced that we have three new members:  Vi Davis, Jacqueline Manley and Adey Makonnen.  He asked the new members to step forward with their sponsors to be inducted into Lions.  Bob Vaughn performed the induction and this brings our membership total to 21 members.

Tom then discussed the issue of dinner meeting space.  Fratelli’s small room that we’ve been recently using is  too small to accommodate 21 people.  They have offered us space in the rear of the restaurant,  separated from the public area with a half wall.  This space does not provide privacy or quiet needed to conduct a meeting.   When we have a dinner speaker, it presents additional challenges.  After discussing a couple alternatives, we decided to return to Fratelli’s for our March 3rd meeting.   At that time, we will have reports on an alternative meeting space and will decide whether and where to relocate our dinner meetings in the future.  The name of one of the restaurant being considered is Osteria Marzano, 6361 Walker Lane, Suite 140 (Metro Park VI), Alexandria, 703 313 9700 osteriamarzano.com.  Several members said they would visit the restaurant and provide input.

Tom then discussed service opportunities to the membership, and asked those interested in participating or volunteering to do so, including:

Lions Children First Program, presented by Sally Kenavan, last month; Secretary Ray presented this last month and encouraged participation to help the children.

GB’s proposal to learn more about Africa Trade and Aid Link Corporation’s programs;  Since GB was not present, he will lead the discussion and answer questions at our March 3rd meeting;

Lions World Lunch Relay, April 4, 2014; Secretary Ray proposed this event to our club last month and there are conflicts with the date of this event;

Worldwide Induction day on Sunday, April 6.  Secretary Ray notified all new members and their sponsors about this event;

Virginia State Convention, May 15-18, 2014 at the Sheraton Premier Hotel in Tysons Corner.  Details were provided earlier; this is a local event and members were asked to consider attending and notify the secretary at our March 3rd meeting.

Webinars available during February through May, 2014 were made available to the membership;

New member, Vi Davis, offered her design skills to any member wishing to renovate their unit to participate in our next Renovator’s Showcase in October, 2014.  The fee she charges will be donated to Lions.

Tom reminded everyone we are currently in the midst of elections here at Watergate and asked for a showing of hands of those who have already voted.

Preparations for Oct. 26 Renovators Showcase on track.  Volunteers to lobby sit and stay in apartments being shown for all or part of the 1-4 PM time are still needed.  Lion Harold distributed tickets to club members.  Arrangements of wine and cheese were discussed.  Bob Vaughn will buy and bring the wine.  Club members are asked to bring door prizes, wrapped if possible.  Hair Salon and Market Café will donate gift certificates.

After a discussion, the club decided to hold the annual Holiday Brunch at the Army-Navy club on Sunday, 15 December starting at  11:30 AM.

Remarks by Karen Parker, 2d Vice District Governor.

District Governor Mike Ryan encourages club members to bring ideas to your club and work together as a team.  Mike has made children’s vision problems a priority.  Personally, his own eye problems could have been corrected if treated in time.  New pedia vision equipment makes superior screening of children’s eye conditions.   Children not treated when in school often drop out of schools and join gangs.

Our club should arrange for new members to be appointed to one of our committees.

Lion Karen encouraged Lions to volunteer for the annual State treatment program in Wise County in far-Southern Virginia.  Lions volunteers do not need to be medical specialists.  While a lot of time and work  is required, those who do help are making a valuable contribution to those in need.  Karen urged our club to put this program in our budget.

Lion Karen also discussed the Lions Youth Camp, Leo Clubs, Canine Companions for Independence, Leader Dogs, Bland Contest,  Hearing Foundation, and the Old Dominion Eye Bank.

Lion Karen congratulated our club on increasing membership from 12 to 18 in one year, the only club of the 13 she has visited to show any increase.

At the close of the meeting, Lion Karen held a meeting with our club’s cabinet to evaluate our work.
