ALEXANDER BAY LIONS CLUB
LIONS IN SIGHT
OPEN HOUSE
2010
The members of the Alexander Bay Lions Club wanted to participate in the LCI project “Lions in Sight” and after some discussion decided to host an Open House for the residents of the Communities of Glovertown, Traytown and Culls Harbour. Photo albums and archival records were dusted off and arranged. Posters were displayed around the communities, radio announcements and interviews took place in the days prior to the Open House. On the evening of Thursday, January 28 the Lions proudly displayed their past, present and future to approximately 400 people.
Displays of Club projects, activities, awards and photos were prepared, as well as displays about LCIF, LFC and the Lions Max Simms Memorial Camp. Lionism in the Glovertown area started in 1956 and the history from then until 2010 was very much evident in photos and documents. The current Alexander Bay Lions Club was established in 1974 and the Lions Community Centre was constructed in 1975. The hundreds of photos, invoices and other documents were closely examined by those who attended. Many seeing pictures of themselves and/or parents and friends at Lions functions years ago.
There were games and treats for the children and finger foods for the adults. Some of the local musicians provided entertainment and tried out the new sound system recently installed by the Club.
Among those in attendance was Lion Clarence Riggs, a member since 1975, who at age 95 is the oldest Lion in the Club. Lion Clar gave an inspiring speech to the crowd about Lionism in the area. The Mayors and some members of the Town Councils of Glovertown and Traytown attended as well as VDG Lewis Fifield and his wife Lion Jean.
The members of the Club considered this project to be a great public relations exercise and according to the comments from many of those who attended the Lions are no longer the best kept secret in the Alexander Bay area. Some membership applications were given out, so there may be an added benefit in the future.
