Santa Flight Monday 5th December 2017

Last Monday 5th December 2017 a group of Wrexham Maelor Lions Club members had the pleasure of taking five deserving children to Manchester Airport for the annual Childflight Santa Flight event.

On meeting at 07.00 am at The Gresford Colliery Sports & Social Club the Children and their families were greeted by The Mayor of Wrexham Councillor John Pritchard, who was accompanied by his Mayoress Ann Pritchard, where he presented a bag of goodies donated by local business to each child.

At 07.30 prompt it was time to board the luxury coach kindly provided by George Edwards & Son Ltd Coach Company of Wrexham.  After having been seen off by the Mayor we were lucky enough to see a wonderful sunrise rising of the Cheshire countryside heralding a lovely crisp and sunny winters day.

On arriving at departures at Manchester Airport the excitement started to build up as the Children were greeted by members of the Santa Flight Team who were all dressed as Pantomime and Disney type characters.  Having produced their passports to the ‘Mad Hatter’ and his assistants the children accompanied by Lion Amelia Lloyd made their way to the departures area where they were entertained by having their faces painted while waiting to board the aircraft kindly made available by Thompson Airways.

Checking In

Festive Hats

While the aircraft went off in search of Santa those left behind travelled to the Runway Visitor Park at the Airport.  While some watched the departures and arrivals including the A380 Emirates Airbus the largest passenger aircraft in the World, others made good use of the catering facilities.

In the meantime the aircraft with the children on-board had flown over the North Wales Coast and the Irish Sea in search of Santa, apparently despite an attempt at landing his Reindeer and sleigh onto the top of the aircraft, he felt that it would be safer to make his way directly to Manchester Airport, have received special clearance and by using a special direct route he arrived in good time at the grotto which had been ably prepared by his Elves to await the return of the children.

On being informed that the Santa Flight aircraft was on approach to the airport, the coach made its way to Arrivals where Santa, his Elves and a host of helpers in all sorts of wonderful costumes were awaiting the children’s return.  While waiting Lion President Joan and Lion Vice President Luke took the opportunity to present a cheque in appreciation of all they do to Stephen Sefton the representative of Santa Flight.

Presenting the Cheque

On exiting into the hall and seeing the Santa was waiting for them the children’s faces lit up and their excitement was abundantly apparent, each child was individually greeted and presented with a sack of presents by Santa and his helpers; this was followed by a group picture being taken by the Santa Flight official photographer.

It was then time to make our way back to Gresford Colliery Sports & Social Club after a wonderful day with memories that will last forever.
