WHAT IS A LION?
The Association of Lions clubs developed from an idea of Melvin Jones, a Community-spirited Chicago insurance agent. By the year of the1917 Convention 22 clubs were represented all within the United States. By year 1927 clubs had been organised in China, Mexico, and Cuba and membership stood at 60,000, in 1,183 clubs.
We now have over 1.5 million members belonging to 42,500 Lions Club in 178 Countries.
The name of our association is The International association of Lions Clubs. Our Emblem shows Lions facing away from the centre represent the past and the future, proud of the past and confident of the future. This emblem is displayed on our pins, badges, flags, correspondence etc.
Our motto is simply ‘We Serve’; our colours are Purple which stands for loyalty and integrity, and gold for sincerity, a generous mind and heart.
Lions Clubs around the world conduct a variety of humanitarian service projects benefiting communities at home, national and intentional levels.
Wrexham Maelor Lion’s Club was chartered on April 19th 1963 and was the first club to be formed in Wales.
Our aim is to work within our Community helping those less fortunate than ourselves or where there is a need.
There are many reasons to become a member. As a Lion, you'll: Help your community and gain valuable skills. Make an impact on people's lives locally and internationally. Learn to be a leader and lead a respected organisation. Network with business people in your community and around the world. Energize your life and have fun, you will grow personally and professionally. Moreover, you will know that the community volunteer work you perform is worthwhile and appreciated.
Membership is by invitation and anyone over 2l years could be a prospective member. All prospective members are invited to attend our meetings where they can learn of the work we do in the community.
