Free Vision Screening for Pre-School Children

Our newest project is Free Vision Screening.  In the first years of life, vision disorders can prevent appropriate development of vision and may lead to Amblyopia (Lazy Eye).  Lazy Eye is a life long vision impairment that cannot be treated after childhood.  We use a computerized camera called the Plusoptix S12 Mobile Screener for the early detection of vision impairments in young children ages 1 year through 5 years.
Performing a screening is simple, takes less than a few seconds and is done by our trained member Lions.  The camera has a smiley face and makes a sound to attract the childs attention.  It only takes a second for the S12 camera to take the measurements.  Results are “pass” or “refer”.  A result of “refer” indicates the child needs to see an eye care professional for a comprehensive exam.

The S12 screener also screens for Anisometropia - refraction of both eyes; Astigmatism - corneal irregularities; Hyperopia - farsightedness; Myopia - nearsightedness; Corneal reflexes - symmetric eye alignment; and Anisocoria - pupil sizes of both eyes.
Vision screening in children should be repeated regularly. A child's eyes change with growth and new vision disorders may occur anytime.

Diabetes Awareness & Free Screenings

Check our Free Diabetes Screening page for our next Screening

In the United States there are over 10 million people who have been diagnosed with diabetes.  There are another 5.5 million people who are unaware that they have diabetes.  Undiagnosed, diabetes can be very damaging to the body.  A screening test can detect diabetes.
People with diabetes are at risk of losing their sight due to Diabetic Retinopathy.  This is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in people between the ages of 20 to 74.  Other complications include Glaucoma, Kidney damage, Coronary artery disease and Nerve damage.
The free screening, using a tiny drop of blood, taken from the finger, gives a blood glucose level.  A postcard with blood glucose level results is given to each person tested.
It only takes a few minutes. All ages are welcome.
YOUNG PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE SCREENED.

Toy Collection for Sharing Center "Santa" Project

On December 11, 2020, our members delivered approximately 393 new toys  to the Central Brevard Sharing Center in Cocoa.  The Sharing Center was thrilled with the donation.  The Sharing Center distributes gifts to over 600 local children of families that are struggling to obtain life’s most basic needs.

Youth & Community Service

We encourage the youth in our communty to get involved in community service.  If you have a project you would like us to help with, please contact us.
